You do not have to spend a lot of money for a gaming laptop that is capable of running Desperados 3. There are many gaming laptops on the market with a great price-performance ratio. If you want the best performance we also have a great gaming laptop for you, which we analyzed in this test.

Laptop for Desperados 3

About Desperados 3

When you think of games in the Wild West, you think (thanks to Rockstar’s western epic Red Dead Redemption 2) of action-packed gunfights, train robberies and horse chases. All this is not to be found in Desperados 3 – or at least only to a limited extent. While the adventure around Outlaw Arthur Morgan was staged as a large-scale open-world sandbox adventure, the developers of Mimimi Productions take a slightly different approach to their work. As in the two predecessors, you will fight your way through tactical skirmishes in real time, in which well thought-out action is often worth more than a nimble trigger finger.

Historically, Desperados 3 takes you back to the 1870s, where a prequel to the first two parts awaits you. You’ll be told an independent story that requires no prior knowledge. So the title is perfect for newcomers. Franchise fans will also get their money’s worth as the plot centres on the well-known hero of the series, John Cooper, who has to deal with up to four companions, including familiar faces like Doc McCoy and Kate O’Hara from the first game Desperados: Wanted Dead or Alive – on his way to New Orleans and of course encounters a few obstacles.

Desperados 3 Gameplay

Blue beans and blood magic

These solve your characters differently, as each character has unique skills and equipment. John carries a pair of pistols, the Doc a sniper rifle and Kate a silencer. This always opens up different ways of proceeding. Not only do you have pistoleros on your team, but you also have Voodoo priestess Isabelle Moreau, who was recently presented in a trailer. She uses occult spells such as mind control or distracts opponents with the help of her cat companion Stella. In Desperados 3, dark forces await you as well, which you will pay for with blood, but will be sorely needed in later encounters with the enemy.

You’ll face this classically in isometric perspective. Desperados 3 is not a graphic masterpiece, but it is charmingly executed and rich in different settings. Furthermore, there are now Mo-Cap cutscenes with English voice output – on the PC even in 60 FPS and 4K resolution. And at the end of the day it’s mainly about the gameplay, where the title is quite convincing.

Time for a showdown

Playfully Desperados 3 is strongly oriented towards the successful first game. A tactical, unobtrusive approach is the best way to achieve success. Plan your actions well, use environmental items such as crates for accidents, combine skills and coordinate the actions of your comrades. There are countless possibilities here, thanks to the developers’ long leash. This time you can use the Showdown mode to coordinate them all. It’s similar to the Shadow Tactics shadow mode, so you can pause time and plan certain actions in advance.

desperados gameplay

Nonetheless, Desperados 3 remains challenging over its 25 to 30 hour playing time. However, with its customisation options, multiple difficulty levels, improved memory (less than five seconds to load) and badges, Desperados 3 is a challenge for beginners and pros alike. Tactics enthusiasts can look forward to the release, which will be available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One by the end of the year.

When will the real-time tactical game Desperados 3 be released? Meanwhile the release window is at least limited. As THQ Nordic has announced, the release is scheduled for this summer on PC and consoles. There is also a new trailer to watch.

Publisher THQ Nordic had already announced some time ago that the release of the real-time tactical game Desperados 3 would not take place before the next business year – i.e. not before June 2020. However, there has not been a concrete date – until now. Recently, the team has again spoken out on this matter and at least narrowed down the time window for the release a bit.

According to a recent press release from THQ Nordic, Desperados 3 is scheduled for release in the summer of 2020, both for PCs and consoles. The publisher intends to announce a concrete release date in the course of the next weeks or months. In order to keep you at least a little bit entertained during the remaining waiting time, a new trailer is available, which you can find directly below this release. The video introduces you to the character Doc McCoy, who not only knows how to handle medicine and syringes, but also his specially made Colt. This allows him to take out his opponents unerringly even from a greater distance.

Ranking First – Best Performance: Asus ROG Zephyrus M

Pros

  • Great performance
  • Many connections
  • Sharp 144Hz display
  • Good processing power with high mobility

Cons

  • Battery life
  • Small display opening angle

ROG Zephyrus M Gaming Laptop for Desperados 3?

With the gaming notebook Zephyrus, ASUS presented a device last year that is supposed to offer maximum performance with the greatest possible mobility. With the Zephyrus M G501, the second generation is already available, which has been further optimized in terms of performance – but at a corresponding price. We do the test.

Many laptop manufacturers have apparently taken a liking to the ninth generation of the Core i series, as its processors have been significantly upgraded in comparison to its predecessors. The i7-9750H, for example, is a true six-core with a base clock of 2.2 gigahertz and a boost clock of up to 4.1 gigahertz. This also applies to ASUS, where Intel’s new CPU has found its way into the ultra-mobile gaming notebook, the Zephyrus.

However, the new performance brings a problem: The laptops have to be cooled accordingly, which ASUS also felt with the Zephyrus in the second generation. Nevertheless, ASUS did not want to make compromises in the form of a clearly noticeable throttling, which is why the design was additionally adapted compared to the first Zephyrus. This brings advantages, but also takes its toll on the mobility that is so important – more about this on the next pages.

First of all, let’s remember the first-generation ASUS Zephyrus, which was released almost exactly one year ago: It was extremely mobile and even weighed less than this year’s model, in addition it was slightly thinner. However, it struggled with a very short battery life and a suboptimal design, especially with the repositioned keyboard and touchpad. Not to mention the graphics card in the Max-Q version, whose increased mobility came at the price of significant performance losses.

Fortunately, the second generation looks much more mature and comes in the familiar layout, meaning that the keyboard and touchpad are back in their usual place. A six-core instead of a four-core processor is now used as the processor and ASUS doesn’t rely on the trimmed GTX 1070 Max Q for the graphic card, but with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 rather an unchoked model with a performance that should be in no way inferior to the desktop 1070. However, this transformation couldn’t be achieved without compromises.

Design and workmanship

Asus ROG Zephyrus M gaming laptop for Desperados 3

The striking ROG design suits the Zephyrus extremely well. The brushed metal back, the chrome edges on the inside and the illuminated ROG logo make it clear that you’re dealing with an expensive notebook that is clearly aimed at gamers.

The quality of workmanship is not quite perfect: the device can be easily pressed in from the top, although this is hardly avoidable with thin devices like this one. Also disturbing in 2020 are the relatively thick edges of the 15.6 inch 144Hz display. ASUS doesn’t offer a touch option, by the way.

Now we can also see what compromise ASUS had to make with the Zephyrus 2020. While the first version of 2018 was advertised as the world’s thinnest gaming notebook (with a GTX 1080), this is no longer true for the second generation. The weight was increased by 0.5 lbs to 4.39 lbs., the thickness increases by 0.2mm. Thus, the Zephyrus 2020 now measures 14.17 x 9.92 x 0.78 inches. This is still remarkable, but a step back in terms of mobility.

The Zephyrus’ Active Aerodynamic System (AAS), which slightly opens the underside of the notebook when opening it, improves air circulation and cools the hardware accordingly. At the same time, the keyboard is tilted slightly towards the user and is more comfortable to use – so AAS is definitely practical.

Asus ROG Zephyrus M gaming laptop for Desperados 3

According to ASUS, the system has been improved once again compared to its predecessor and provides 20 percent cooler hardware inside. Two 12V fans pull the fans to the outside in such a way that as little dust as possible can penetrate the inside of the case. The back can also be removed relatively easily for cleaning and maintenance.

Technical details

Now to the hardware: A Core i7-9750H with six cores and 12 threads, 16GB DDR4 RAM, a 1TB Samsung SM961 M.2 SSD and of course a RTX 2070 graphics card is installed. At first glance, there are no signs that you have to assume a reduced performance, if you dispense with Dual Channel RAM (there is a latch in single channel mode). The display resolves in FullHD and supports G-Sync. The panel is only averagely bright, but offers a good viewing angle stability.

Benchmarks

At the beginning of our benchmark comparison, we compared the Zephyrus M with notebooks of a similar performance and/or mobility class. The device can take the lead in two benchmarks at once, but it’s still enough for third place in PiFast.

Asus ROG Zephyrus M gaming laptop for Desperados 3

Fortunately, ASUS relies on the fast M.2 model Samsung SM961 with 1TB for memory. It achieves a good 1,370 MB/s in sequential reading with CrystalDiskMark, even a very good 1,496 MB/s in writing and in the Total 4K QD32 section, it reaches 611 MB/s. The device can also convince in 3DMark Time Spy with 5.385 points, but 99.2 percent were measured in the stress test.

You don’t have any problems at gaming in 1080p – but we also expected this from a full-grown RTX 2070. This makes the Zephyrus M a great option for Desperados 3, performance-wise. Beyond that, you don’t have to worry about the resolution because the built-in panel only supports FullHD anyway – at least if you don’t use an external monitor.

The Zephyrus also offers a decent gaming pleasure with its 15.6″ display including G-Sync and 144 Hertz refresh rate. It covers 99 percent of the sRGB and 75 percent of the AdobeRGB color space. But the image brightness is at best average with 268 nits. Competitive devices like the Razer Blade and Gigabyte Aero 15X offer more here. On the other hand, the black values on the ASUS device are very good, and the contrast is also in the upper midfield with 770:1.

Asus ROG Zephyrus M gaming laptop for Desperados 3

The idle temperature is comparatively high at 34 degrees Celsius, the competition is usually a few degrees below that. The temperatures are also a bit higher on average under load. We measured 77 degrees in gaming, for example. In view of the still very thin design, Intel’s six-core is sufficiently well cooled, though.

The change from four to six cores and from the Max Q to the normal GPU design is clearly noticeable in the power consumption: 95 watts are used for video encoding, and even a proud 158 watts for gaming. This also quickly gives rise to justified doubts about the battery life, which also turns out very short with 303 minutes.

Verdict

Asus ROG Zephyrus M gaming laptop for Desperados 3

Even if the new ASUS Zephyrus could not maintain the extremely small and thin design of its predecessor, the improvements realized in this way can definitely justify this step. Only now is the device freed from teething troubles and can show its best side. With the Core i7-9750H and the RTX 2070, the notebook could put the competition in its place several times in the benchmark test and offer more than enough performance for playing current titles in FullHD.

The strong performance in a still thin design, the practical AAS cooling system and the finally usable keyboard with touchpad speak for the Zephyrus. The display is also alright despite “only” FullHD and offers a feature set appropriate for gaming with G-Sync and 144 Hz. The rather large display edges and the very short battery life are negative, though. Further negative points would also be the lack of an Ethernet port and the slower single channel RAM.

Despite the just mentioned flaws, the ASUS Zephyrus M GM501 gets our editorial recommendation due to its high performance and mobility. It is the performance winner in the category “Best Gaming Laptops for Desperados 3”.

Ranking Second – Best price-performance ratio: Dell G5 15

Dell G5 15 gaming laptop for desperados 3

Pros

  • Good gaming performance
  • Best price-performance ratio
  • Discreetly designed housing
  • LAN connection & Thunderbolt 3
  • Fingerprint Sensor

Cons

  • Slow SSD
  • A bit heavy

Dell G5 15: Gaming Laptop Performance for Desperados 3

With a little more than 1,000 Dollar, you can generally not expect a gaming laptop to have great features. Instead, the Dell primarily offers the most necessary equipment in the tested configuration: A small SSD for the operating system, programs and space for not much more than a game. The fact that an Intel Core i7 is built in is a sign that focus is on performance, as it offers six real cores with a TDP of 45 watts and a good basic and turbo clock rate. The biggest advantage of an Intel Core i7 in the 45 watt class is two cores more, which, especially in games like Desperados 3, can be fully utilized.

Most important for gaming is then primarily the graphics chip, and the lowest class isn’t built in here: The Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 in the Max-Q version offers an important performance boost in comparison to the 1050 Ti or 1650Ti. Thus, the Dell can show a good performance and most current games, like Desperados 3, are smoothly playable – often even on the highest details.

Dell G5 15 5587: The cheap corners

Dell G5 15 gaming laptop for desperados 3

Savings have to be made on one or the other corner. This starts with the rather slow SSD and continues with the display. Whilst it offers a viewing angle stable IPS panel and can show a good chessboard contrast, the brightness is below average with around 230 cd/m² and the color reproduction is underground (61% sRGB color space coverage).

The case makes a stable impression, is optically rather unobtrusive and doesn’t make much of a fuss. While the touchpad is very pleasant, the keyboard is disappointing. The stroke length is extremely short and doesn’t fit a gaming notebook. The good counterpressure of the individual keys then doesn’t make the rating turn out so badly. Thanks to the thick case, the fans are well audible during gaming, but not very loud. Unfortunately, the still acceptable background noise is accompanied by a quite high frequency sound, which is annoying in the long run.

Dell G5 15: Connections and mobility

Dell G5 15 gaming laptop for desperados 3

The Dell offers a useful connection variety: Three USB 3.0 Type A and one USB-C with Thunderbolt 3 support are great. Although a native DisplayPort connection is missing, the monitor/TV connection possibility is fully given thanks to HDMI and DisplayPort via USB-C. Besides the two-stage keyboard illumination, the fingerprint reader is also a nice gimmick. Full-size SD card reader and RJ45 (wired network) complete the good connectivity.

In a gaming notebook, mobility is undoubtedly very secondary – and therefore only adds to the overall rating by 5 percent. Nevertheless, the good battery life is worth mentioning: Just under 7 hours of video playback and 4.5 hours of productive work free you from the power cable load – but not from the high weight of the thick case: 5.9 lbs. are not exactly portable. In the end, Dell manages to deliver a good graphics card at a reasonable price, while the restrictions are less of a burden.

Dell G5 15 gaming laptop for desperados 3

Verdict: Best price-performance ratio gaming laptop for Desperados 3

At the end of our test, it’s only enough for the Dell G5 15 for the second place. However, it’s not bad because of this, only some concessions have to be accepted due to the favorable price. In the end, our test certifies that the device’s performance, display and mobility are good. The overall rating of “Very Good” results from a satisfactory equipment and adequate ergonomics. Because the pricing is very fair, the G5 earns the best price-performance ratio award for the best Desperados 3 gmaing laptops.

Ranking Third: Lenovo Legion Y740

Lenovo Legion Y740 gaming laptop for desperados 3

Pros

  • RTX graphics for top performance
  • Almost perfect equipment
  • Good gaming ergonomics
  • Very good price

Cons

  • Weak contrast of the display
  • Battery life could be better

Lenovo Legion Y740: Simple and practical design gaming laptop for Desperados 3

In opposition to other manufacturers of gaming notebooks like Asus or Razer, Lenovo basically relies on a simple and unobtrusive design for its Legion Y740. The majority of the case has a smooth surface in the color “iron gray”. Merely the fans, which remind one of industrial radiator grills, betray that this is a gaming notebook – and of course the colorful RGB lighting of the keyboard and the ventilation slots.

The display is conspicuously offset to the front, whereby the case protrudes a few centimeters to the back. Lenovo has decided to place most of the ports on the back instead of on the side when designing the Legion Y740. These interfaces are conveniently marked with illuminated symbols visible from above, so that you can find the desired connections without much fiddling around. The placement of the interfaces on the rear then provides for more order when the notebook is stationary on the desk. However, it can sometimes be more useful for mobile use if the ports are on the sides. So the design has advantages and disadvantages. The material quality is excellent.

Top performance in games and lots of power for other tasks

The Lenovo Legion Y740 17 inch is available in a variety of different hardware configurations, which can be individually assembled on the manufacturer’s website. The device we tested is the retail variant, Y740-17. It comes with the six-core Intel Core i7-9750H processor, clocked at 2.2 GHz with 4.1 GHz boost. The graphics chip is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Ti, optimized for slim notebooks, with six GByte graphics memory. And the main memory amounts to 16 GByte – that’s enough for all tasks.

All in all, this results in a performance that can compete with the top of our best list, even if only on the third place here in this test for gaming laptops for Desperados 3 – as of March 2020, this is the Dell Alienware 15 R4 with Core i9 processor and RTX-2080 graphics chip. In the synthetic gaming benchmarks, such as 3DMark FireStrike, both devices are almost on a par. However, the newer RTX notebook can assert itself in the “real” performance in games and achieves a better fps value (frames per second) in almost all tests. The difference is hardly noticeable, as in FarCry 5 with ultra-graphics settings: Here 92 fps against 91 fps. The Dell notebook scores better in productivity benchmarks because of its faster processor, but in the overall impression we give both devices the same top performance rating: 1.0.

A “hybrid mode” can be activated in the included Lenovo software. This seems to be an alternative and somewhat hidden variant of Nvidia’s Optimus technology in this case. Thus, the system dynamically decides whether the graphics performance of the Nividia graphics chip is really needed for the current notebook usage, or whether the integrated graphics of the Intel processor is sufficient. By temporarily switching off the dedicated graphics chip, the battery life is increased. Switching the “hybrid mode” on and off requires a restart in each case.

Good 144 Hz display with G-Sync function

The screen of our version of the Lenovo Legion Y740 is an IPS LC display with a 17.3 inch diagonal, Full HD resolution (1,920 by 1,080 pixels) and a 144 Hz refresh rate. This allows large-format gaming fun, but of course makes the device larger and more unwieldy. The standard RGB color space is covered to 93 percent, which is completely sufficient for games. G-Sync is also supported for dynamic synchronization of the display with the Nvidia graphics card. However, since the synchronization mode gives the Nividia graphics chip sole control and “locks out” the processor’s integrated graphics, G-Sync and the already mentioned “hybrid mode” can’t be used at the same time – you have to choose one of them.

The display’s readings are mixed: The maximum brightness is still quite solid at 255 candelas per square meter. This only makes itself noticeable in case of doubt when you want to gamble in sunshine. However, the display shows the lowest value in our gaming notebook’s best list with 131:1 in the checkerboard contrast. Thus, the gaming quality suffers. Nevertheless, the display still gets the grade “good” from us overall.

Storage space and connections saturated – and colorful RGB lighting

You can’t do much better than the Lenovo Legion Y740 in terms of equipment. Our configuration came with a 512 GByte SSD, so it offers sufficient storage space. The three USB 3.0 type A interfaces complement a type C interface with Thunderbolt 3 standard and thus also DisplayPort support. Two of the USB inputs are located on the back of the device, the other two on the sides. There is a separate Mini DisplayPort interface and HDMI for connecting external displays. WLAN ac and Bluetooth 4.1 are available. Like most gaming notebooks, the Lenovo device has a Gbit network connection. Merely missing bonus points prevent the maximum score here.

As far as controlling the keyboard’s RGB lighting and the other color elements on the device are concerned, we had some problems finding them at first. It’s not part of the Lenovo software, but is controlled by a separate Corsair software. Once that was sorted out, we were able to adjust the colours of the LEDs individually. Friends of colorful gadgets get their money’s worth.

Solid keyboard for gaming

The keyboard of the Lenovo Legion Y740 fits into the good environment of gaming notebooks. That means: It is nice for its purpose, the keys’ stroke length is short, but the keystroke is still crisp. But the notebook ergonomics of course don’t come close to a real gaming keyboard. And the haptic is also not quite as pleasant as in competing devices, but still good. The number pad, which is separate but lacks the upper line, takes a bit of getting used to. If you don’t pay attention to this, you’ll easily slip in the line and hit the wrong keys.

The touchpad with separate keys is also good, even if not outstanding. The smooth surface can lead to faltering movements if the fingers aren’t completely dry. This is probably also a matter of getting used to and not really a negative point. Technically, there’s nothing wrong with the mouse replacement. The case is generally stable, but yields a bit under pressure. The Lenovo device doesn’t produce any disturbing noises. High tones are not perceptible, medium pitches are minimal. The fans are of course audible, but the overall loudness is pleasant.

A bulky device with average battery life

The Lenovo Legion Y740 is almost the biggest gaming notebook in our top list because of its 17.3 inch display and stable frame. A 16 inch centimeter wide and 12 inch deep device has to be accommodated first of course, which limits the mobility. Moreover, the gaming notebook weighs a hefty 5.2 lbs. Whether you often put the Lenovo Legion in your pocket or rather leave it on the desk is another question. The battery life benefits at least partially from the “hybrid mode”, which temporarily turns off the Nvidia graphics chip. A solid runtime of 05:33 hours is thus achieved in video playback. But the battery only manages a weak 03:29 hours in simulated workload. The result is only “satisfactory”.

Verdict: Solid gaming laptop for Desperados 3

The gaming notebook Lenovo Legion Y740 stands very far ahead in the test with its top performance compared to many other laptops, but the competition in this test is too strong, that`s why it only got third place here. The new graphics chip Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660Tii delivers impressive performance in games, like Desperados 3. The equipment is also almost perfect. Slightly weaker scores for the display and ergonomics prevent the top placement, though. Nevertheless, the gaming notebook is a strong thing for which Lenovo demands a proud price. All in all a great future-proof gaming laptop for Desperados 3 and many other AAA games still coming out in the future.
