You are looking for the best GTX 1050 Ti graphics card? Then you are in the right place! The GTX 1050 Ti is far from the best gaming graphics cards available today, especially compared to the current midrange AMD Radeon RX cards.

With the Geforce GTX 1050 Ti, Nvidia introduced a brisk midrange graphics card based on the Pascal microarchitecture manufactured in the 16 nanometer FinFET process in October 2016, which is available from 170 Dollar and is fast enough for current games in Full HD resolution with high details.

The heart of the GTX 1050 Ti is the built-in GP107 graphics chip with 768 shader and 48 texture units and 32 ROPs.

Nvidia specifies clock rates of 1.290 MHz (1.392 MHz boost) for the chip.

The 4.0 GByte GDDR5 video memory clocks with an effective 7.0 GHz – the GTX 1050 Ti reaches a bandwidth of 112 GByte/s via the 128 bit wide memory interface.

In terms of performance, the GTX 1050 Ti is placed between the slower (20 percent) Geforce GTX 1050 and the faster (about 70 percent) GTX 1060.

Competitor AMD has a slightly slower (15 percent) Radeon RX 560 and a significantly faster (60 percent) RX 570 graphics card in its range.

The Pascal generation is characterized by a significantly increased energy efficiency compared to its predecessor Maxwell in 28 nm production.

The Geforce GTX 1050 Ti has a TDP of 75 watts, so that the PCI Express slot already supplies sufficient power to operate the graphics card.

In contrast to faster Geforce models such as the GTX 1070 and GTX 1060, Nvidia does without a reference card called Founders Edition for the GTX 1050 Ti.

The SSC version, whose abbreviation stands for “Super-super clocked”, is inherently more overclocked than the SC version.

However, this difference is quite small: We are talking about just 12 MHz for the basic and boost clock.

However, the small size is accompanied by the compromise of having only one fan available.

The powerhouse in our overview is, even if quite tight, the EVGA 1050 TI SSC Gaming.

No big surprise, because EVGA really got it all out with the SSC version.

However, its result is only just ahead of the Asus ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, which you can definitely note as an alternative in terms of performance.

The Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mini*’s result is also surprising.

Although it is missing a few points on the strongest card in our comparison, it does achieve a remarkable result.

It’s the strongest 1050 Ti version if you’re looking for one of the especially compactly built cards and it’s also the smallest of its kind.

One thing becomes immediately clear: All GTX 1050 Ti cards we present here are good for something and the performance differences are so small that they don’t really carry any weight.

What is the best GTX 1050 Ti: Our recommendation

The place as our recommendation is shared by two cards.

The Zotac GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mini is our favorite due to its good price-performance ratio.

Together with the model from KFA2, it is the most affordable version of a 1050 Ti.

At the same time, however, it directly follows the two most powerful models and outdoes some of the big cards in terms of power.

Its compact design allows it to be used even in very small systems, because with a length of 145mm it is proudly 84mm – 96mm shorter than the winners in the performance comparison.

As an alternative we would recommend the Gigabyte GTX 1050 TI Windforce OC 4G.

It is about the same strength and only slightly more expensive.

With a length of 229mm, it’s a normal size, but has two fans and a zero-fan mode.

The nicely designed card is also an optical plus for your computer thanks to the backplate, which hides the board.

If you want more performance and would rather choose one of the benchmark winners, you should also take a look at the RX 570 series from competitor AMD in terms of price-performance ratio before buying.

These graphics cards are only slightly more expensive on average, but they are a good deal more computational. You can read more about this in one of the following sections.

Double or single fan on the GTX 1050 Ti: Which is better?

It’s noticeable when comparing the various models that there are versions with one and two fans.

We will show you the advantages and disadvantages.

1050 Ti with single fan

Ultimately, choosing a graphics card with only one fan results in less space being required.

So if you want to create a very small setup or simply don’t have much space (in a mini-tower or case with external GPU), this might be your choice.

Also the price tends to be a little bit lower for single fan models.

On the other hand, cards that are cooled by a single fan tend to be louder.

Because this single fan literally has to work harder to keep the temperature within acceptable levels, there is more noise to your ears.

Furthermore, with 1050 Ti graphics cards with only one fan, the average temperature is often higher, which also limits their overclocking potential.

1050 Ti with double fan

However, if you are looking for a slightly higher cooling capacity and thus power output, you can choose a GPU with two fans.

Theoretically, the power consumption increases, but as unnoticeable as it is, it is not reflected in the manufacturer’s specifications.

Dual fan cards are generally more performance oriented and most models are designed to bring a GPU as close as possible to its maximum potential.

This essentially means higher clock rates, but also a higher price.

Big advantage: dual fan cards are quieter than their little brothers, because the fans don’t have to turn up so high.

The obvious disadvantage is that the larger heatsinks take up more space and make them more expensive.

Apart from that, the only real problem is that you need a midi tower case for the large GTX 1050 Ti cards to fit properly.

1050 or 1050 Ti?

Basically, the first question is whether a 1050 Ti is even worth it compared to the basic 1050 version.

Of course the simple 1050 models are cheaper to buy, but the price difference is not really big anymore (40-60$ mostly).

It is also self-explanatory that the Ti versions have a higher performance, so that you can achieve at least 6-10 FPS more on average (and depending on the game).

Apart from this plus, it should be noted that the Ti versions listed by us have 4 GB GDDR5, whereas the simple versions of the 1050 series have only 3 or even only 2 GB available.

Thus, due to the rather small price difference, the 1050 Ti would clearly be the best choice.

The larger graphics memory ultimately ensures significantly more pleasant frame rates, sharper textures, higher texture resolution and better multi-rendering.

Especially in games like PUGB or Fortnite you will notice the difference between a 1050 Ti and a 1050.

But see the difference yourself in the following video:

From the video it becomes clear very quickly: 4GB clearly win.

The benchmark values of userbenchmark also give a good clue: The 1050 Ti is on average about 12% faster than the non-ti version.

The bottom line is that we recommend investing the 50-60$ surcharge in a GTX 1050 Ti, it’s worth it!

1050 Ti vs. 1060

If you compare the series of the 1050 Ti with the next larger models from Nvidia, the GeForce 1060, you’ll of course have to dig deeper into your pockets for the more powerful model series.

However, the cards from this series predominantly have 6 GB graphic card memory instead of 4 GB as it is the case with the 1050 Ti.

GTX 1050 Ti 4GB vs. GTX 1060 3GB

Even the 3GB version of the GTX 1060 has considerably more Cuda cores (1152 vs. 768) in comparison to the GTX 1050 Ti.

Because VRAM is only ONE factor for power in a graphics card, the 1050 Ti lags considerably behind despite the 1GB VRAM advantage.

The following video shows you how this is expressed in current games (the 1050 Ti already weakens here for example in Project Cars 2 with only 34 FPS):

GTX 1050 Ti 4GB vs. GTX 1060 6GB

In the end, an average performance increase of 80% can be achieved when switching from the 1050 Ti 4GB to the GTX 1060 6GB, but the price increase is also at the same level.

Unfortunately, you can’t achieve a performance increase at a bargain price.

But if you have the necessary budget and want to stay loyal to NVIDIA, it would be worthwhile to consider purchasing a card from the 1060 series.

1050 Ti compared to the previous generation

An upgrade from the 900 series Nvidias is only of limited use.

The performance increase from a GTX 950 to a 1050 Ti is only moderate (+16%), from a GTX 960 or GTX 970 it’s often even a DOWNGRADE (with the GTX 970 for sure).

As you can see in the following video, a GTX 960 can easily keep up with a 1050 Ti:

GTX 1050 Ti in comparison with AMD graphics cards

If you compare the 1050 Ti with products from AMD, it is noticeable that there seems to be no significant alternative, you don’t want or can’t spend more money.

The model series RX 550 and RX 560 are below or on the same level as the 1050 Ti in terms of price, but they can’t keep up in terms of performance and sometimes have a higher power consumption.

According to Tweaktown, a Radeon RX 470 is the faster card, but at the same time more expensive and not really available at a reasonable price.

Also on user benchmarks, the RX 470 achieves a good 40% more performance than a GTX 1050 Ti, so if you can maybe grab the Sapphire RX 470 at a good price (and are up for AMD), then hit it.

However, the RX 460 is slower than the GTX 1050 Ti, so there is no real alternative.

The RX 570 is clearly superior to the 1050 Ti, but still requires an almost incomparably higher budget.

The increase in performance is about 50%.

But the power consumption is also twice as high at 150W, making an external power supply necessary.

Therefore, the cards are partly equipped with 8 GB GDDR5 compared to the 4 GB GDDR5 of the 1050 Ti series.

But if you want to use a RX 570 you should pay attention to this, because some of the cards also have only 4 GB GDDR5.

The RX 580 is finally a real alternative with about 80% performance increase compared to the 1050 Ti.

The price increase is however in percent about the same. So if you’ve been considering the 1050 Ti mainly because of the price or the compact design, you will certainly not find what you’re looking for.

In the entry-level range of gaming-capable graphic cards, the 1050 Ti can only be avoided in the current generations if there is more space in the case or a larger budget.

Installing the GTX 1050 Ti – What is important?

Last but not least we have some special tips for you, which you should consider before buying a GTX 1050 Ti:

Check compatibility with the mainboard

Of course, you should make sure that you have a motherboard whose PCI connector can handle the current generations. This is especially important if you want to upgrade your old system.

Pay attention to size & dimensions

Also check the manufacturer’s size specifications so that the card of your choice will fit in your case.

We have already included the required power consumption of your power supply in the detailed views.

CPU should not be too old.

Also, don’t forget that a new graphics card alone does not form a powerful gaming PC. If you have an older processor in your system, it can slow down the processing power of the graphics card (bottlenecking).

  • Intel: You should make sure that you own at least one Intel i3, which has been on the market for no longer than about 4 years
  • For AMD: We advise you to use at least a processor of the FX-6000 series or stronger

While Intel Celeron / Pentium processors and AMD A-series processors will continue to work with the GTX 1050 Ti, bottlenecking problems will inevitably occur.

The connections depend on

As you know, there are currently three main technologies you can use to connect your graphics card to your monitor:

  • DisplayPort
  • HDMI
  • DVI

Occasionally, you may see VGA connectors on some of the cheaper cards and monitors, but this is an outdated technology that is rarely used today.

Fortunately, a GTX 1050 Ti doesn’t force you to make difficult decisions, as each model has at least one of the above-mentioned connectors.

How you finally connect the card is up to you. In this price range you can simply take what is most convenient.

If your monitor has built-in speakers or the speakers are connected to the monitor, it’s best to use DisplayPort or HDMI.

You don’t have to worry about the picture quality, by the way.

That’s a problem for people with 4K monitors and three-digit refresh rates.

Conclusion: Is a GTX 1050 Ti still worthwhile?

It can’t be denied that the GTX 1050 Ti is ultimately a budget GPU.

However, if you are looking for the cheapest and most affordable graphics card, then this is the right choice.

The price performance is simply right with the GTX 1050 Ti in comparison to its “alternatives” from AMD.

However, if you are looking for a strong GPU, which you can overclock for good performance, then we advise you to get something more beefy.

Between the GTX 1050 Ti and the GTX 1060 there is a problematic price-performance gap, but fortunately there are still Radeon cards to fill it.

Unless you really want to use Nvidia’s GameWorks technologies, we recommend you to buy a Radeon RX 570, RX 580 or even the latest generation RX 470 or RX 480 for superior performance and better future-proofing.

MSI GeForce GTX 1050 and Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti in review

Techtestreport tests the two newcomers, for which there are no reference designs, based on the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC and the Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti StormX.

The Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti StormX was made available to Techtestreport at short notice by system integrator MIFcom, the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC was delivered directly by Nvidia.

A small GPU from Samsung

The GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti both rely on the GPU GP107 and this is not from TSMC.

Instead, the computing core is the only one of the Pascal family manufactured by Samsung in the modern 14 nm FinFET process – and thus basically in the same process in which AMD has the Polaris GPUs manufactured by Globalfoundries.

The GP107 itself measures 132 mm² and weighs 3.3 billion transistors and is thus significantly smaller than the GP106 of the GeForce GTX 1060, which uses 200 mm² with 4.4 billion transistors.

It is noticeable that the packing density of the GP107 is slightly higher than that of the two faster Pascal offshoots – the difference of effectively 14 to 16 nm is noticeable here.

There are differences in the shader units

In the fully activated GP107 there are two graphics processing clusters, each with three streaming multiprocessors (SMX), this version is installed on the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

This corresponds to 768 shader and 48 texture units. On the GeForce GTX 1050, on the other hand, one SMX is disabled, so that 640 ALUs and 40 TMUs are still active.

Nvidia slightly compensates for the loss of 17 percent execution units with the clock rate.

The large card offers a basic clock rate of 1,290 MHz and the smaller one of slightly higher 1,354 MHz – that’s almost five percent difference.

All other key data of the GPU, like the 128 bit wide memory interface, the 32 ROPs and 1,024 kilobyte cache are completely identical.

The memory clock of both graphics cards is 3,500 MHz and the TDP a maximum of 75 watts.

This means that the smallest Pascal card does not require an external power connector.

Some manufacturers, however, still use a six-pin connector in order to be able to run higher clock rates at higher TDP. The GP107 as well as the GP106 does not support SLI.

The GeForce GTX 1050 has only 2 GB

There is a serious difference in memory: Nvidia plans a memory expansion of 2,048 MB for the GeForce GTX 1050 and 4,096 MB for the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

The clock rates under load

The MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC clocks with a maximum of 1.810 MHz.

However, you only get a maximum of 1.747 MHz in games after a short time.

In return, the Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti StormX operates with up to 1.734 MHz, of which up to 1.696 MHz remains in games.

Both graphic cards never run into the temperature but instead into the power target and then reduce the frequencies.

This is consistently the case with the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, while MSI allows a bit more freedom.

Currently, the Power Target can’t be increased on both graphic cards – probably not to exceed the 75 watts of the PCIe bus.

The MSI GeForce GTX 105 2G OC certainly clocks with the maximum possible clock rate of 1.747 MHz in nine games.

The graphic card clocks the lowest in Anno 2205, where the frequency drops to 1.671 MHz.

In return, it looks different in the Palit GeForce GTX 1050 Ti StormX, which can’t permanently hold the 1.696 MHz enabled by the BIOS in any game.

You only get to see this briefly again and again in GTA V. In most games the frequency is a bit over 1.600 MHz, but in some titles it is also a bit below that.

1.544 MHz is the lowest clock to be observed.

Nvidia’s planned 64 MHz clock difference between the base version and Ti model is thus exceeded by both test candidates.

Benchmarks in 1.920 × 1.080

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti bumps right into the gap between the Radeon RX 460 and Radeon RX 470 in terms of performance. 1,920 × 1,080 is around 32 percent faster than a Radeon RX 460 with four gigabytes and 25 percent slower than the Radeon RX 470.

In the end, the performance is eight percent above that of a GeForce GTX 960 and thus on par with an inherently overclocked GeForce GTX 960.

The gap to the faster model with Pascal, the GeForce GTX 1060, is 63 percent.

The GeForce GTX 1050 works on average 16 percent slower than its bigger brother, but is still eleven percent faster than the Radeon RX 460 with twice the memory.

The gap to the Radeon RX 460 with 2,048 MB is 32 percent. Compared to the predecessor GeForce GTX 950 with 2 GB, the performance increase is 15 percent.

2 GB memory is often too little

A look at the individual games reveals that the gap between the GeForce GTX 1050 and the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is surprisingly high in some games.

In Ashes of the Singularity, for example, the difference is 39 percent, in Mirror’s Edge Catalyst it is even 64 percent – and there are other exceptions to the norm.

The reason is to be found in the memory expansion.

In many games, the 2,048 MB VRAM is no longer sufficient for the GeForce GTX 1050.

Although a lack of memory initially makes itself felt with poor frame times (spacing of the individual images) and not with lower FPS, if this is the case, there are clearly noticeable hitches.

Nvidia’s good memory management doesn’t always help the GTX 1050

The GeForce GTX 1050 then doesn’t help that Nvidia has better memory management than AMD – the competition with 2 GB is often beaten even more clearly than the one with 4 GB, but the performance is then absolutely equally bad.

Video playback

The previous Pascal GPUs perform very well in video playback and the GP107 on the GeForce GTX 1050 and the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti makes no exception.

It’s noticeable that the video unit isn’t quite as fast as the ones on the GP104 and GP106, regardless of the resolution and the codec, but is still very fast in the end.

To compensate, the power consumption is still a bit lower than on the GeForce GTX 1060.

Power consumption

GP107 is as energy efficient as GP104 and GP106 have demonstrated.

The Palit GeForce GTX 1050 StormX draws an average of just 126 watts from the power outlet over the games tested.

The almost equally fast Asus GeForce GTX 960 Strix of the Maxwell generation still needs 190 watts for the same performance with the same system and the slower Sapphire Radeon RX 460 Nitro+ 149 watts.

However, the MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC shows that the GP107 GPU doesn’t have to be as efficient in every configuration as the one on Palit’s graphic card.

Because even though the graphics card is slower, the 3D accelerator needs four more watts on average with 130 watts.

The minimal clock rates raised by MSI are not responsible for this, as they only increase the power consumption by about one watt.

The hunger for power in desktop mode

Both with only one monitor and in multi-monitor mode, the GP107 probes require comparably little energy as the GeForce GTX 1060, but AMD’s Polaris-11 GPU on the Radeon RX 460 is partly superior in these scenarios, unlike under load.

The hunger for power on YouTube

If you watch YouTube videos, you don’t have to be afraid of high power consumption with the GeForce GTX 1050 and the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

In a Full-HD video it is on the good level of the GeForce GTX 1060 and in an Ultra-HD video it is even lower.

There is a close battle with the Radeon RX 460 in Ultra HD.

Overclockability

Both tested graphics cards with GP107 can only be overclocked to a limited extent, because the preset power target can’t be increased, at least not at the moment, and is usually already reached with the factory settings.

The clock rates can still be increased, but the clock regulators have to be pulled up considerably for a slightly higher frequency.

A plus of 300 MHz in the tool results in 150 MHz in games on the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

The GDDR5 memory can be overclocked by 397 MHz to 3.920 MHz. Higher frequencies are also possible, but this then has a greater impact on the GPU clock due to the power target.

The performance increases by nine to twelve percent depending on the game.

The MSI GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC allows an increased base clock rate of 248 MHz, which results in about 1,800 MHz, as in the Palit card.

The memory goes along with 3.850 MHz before the influence on the GPU clock becomes too high.

Depending on the title, the graphics card gains three to eight percent more performance from the higher clock.

Conclusion

With GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti, Nvidia Pascal is now also available for significantly less than 200 Dollar and AMD RX 460 and RX 470 have current competition for the first time.

Furthermore, the energy efficiency is impressive, which Pascal obviously doesn’t only owe to the very good process at TSMC, because the GP107 from Samsung’s production is in no way inferior to it.

Without an additional power connection, the frequencies don’t turn out quite as high as in the GeForce GTX 1060, but are still very high in comparison with the GeForce GTX 1060 with 1.6 to 1.8 GHz.

Especially the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is very pleasing.

It achieves the performance of an overclocked GeForce GTX 960 and uses almost 70 watts less in the test system.

Compared to the predecessor, it has a good 10 watts less consumption with 20 percent more performance.

The Radeon RX 460 with 4 GB is beaten by 32 percent with 23 watts less consumption.

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is unrivaled in its performance

The GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is convincing all along the line at a price of around 150 Dollar.

Performance, 4,096 MB memory, energy efficiency, the complete feature set of the Pascal architecture – everything fits.

With the price, the graphics card also fills a gap left by AMD: The Radeon RX 460 is cheaper, but also significantly slower.

The Radeon RX 470 is faster, but also more expensive.

Because the Radeon RX 460 lacks a bit of raw power for modern AAA games, the GeForce GTX 1050 Ti is the new perfect entry level graphics card for gamers.

The GeForce GTX 1050 has too little memory

Averaged over all benchmarks, Nvidia has obviously also done everything right in the GeForce GTX 1050:

The Radeon RX 460 is beaten both with 2 GB and 4 GB.

However, a look at the details reveals that this graphics card can also run out of memory in current games under Full HD.

Mirror’s Edge Catalyst shows that a game can become unplayable for this reason alone.

Even the GeForce GTX 1050 doesn’t change anything about Techtestreport’s last recommendation not to use graphics cards with only 2 GB memory.

The Radeon RX 460 with 4 GB at the same price of 125 Dollar is slower at first glance, but proves to be still playable in the problematic games.

Thus, it is overall the more reliable and above all future-proof 3D accelerator.
