Of course, not all GTX 1660 Ti models are the same, as they differ in terms of performance, features, price or cooling.

Although Nvidia has planned for a certain cost difference between its midrange graphics cards RTX 2060 and GTX 1660 Ti, the current prices of the custom models show that the most expensive 1660 Ti models are more expensive than the cheapest 2060 models (350 Dollar vs. 330 Dollar).

At 300 Dollar, the EVGA GTX 1660 Ti XC Ultra Gaming isn’t one of the most expensive representatives, but the question still arises as to how much performance is offered here and whether it’s worth the purchase rationally.

The design already shows that EVGA offers a bit more than just standard.

The massive cooler promises a decent performance potential and is easily recognizable by the wide fins.

The heat is distributed over three heatpipes, which run to the right.

Above them is the dual fan unit, with the company logo and the model name printed on the side.

The fans work semi-passvely and are therefore switched off at low load.

Those who are still looking for RGB lighting will be disappointed, though.

EVGA has not planned any RGB LEDs for this model, which is a bold step in view of the competition.

A backplate isn’t available either, which is why the relatively short motherboard with only 188 mm length quickly comes to light.

Finally, the card is completed by the cooler, which finally brings the card to 268 mm length.

Nvidia provides a 6-pin connector for the GTX 1660 Ti’s power supply as standard.

EVGA, on the other hand, has an 8-pin connector, which at least raises certain expectations when it comes to overclocking.

And in fact, the card is already overclocked in the factory:

1500 MHz (base) and 1800 MHz (boost) are possible, but the 6 GB GDDR6 memory runs at 12 Gb/s without overclocking.

The usual mix of HDMI, DisplayPort and DVI is available at the ports.

This is just enough for a card in this price range.

The EVGA GTX 1660 Ti XC Ultra Gaming primarily has to compete with the GTX 1070 and AMD Vega 56 in the test. You can already assume in advance that this will be a close race.

Furthermore, the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 are compared in order to find out how big the performance difference to the more expensive Turing cards is.

Finally, a comparison to the middle class of the last generation shouldn’t be missing (AMD RX 580 and Nvidia GTX 1060). As always, all cards were tested with the latest drivers.

Benchmark Applications

Especially the gaming performance under Windows 10 is put to the test in the synthetic benchmark 3DMark Time Spy.

Under both tested resolutions, the EVGA GTX 1660 Ti’s performance is most comparable to the GTX 1070.

If you also take the Palit GTX 1660 Ti StormX for comparison, the EVGA model is about three percent faster in both cases – almost negligible.

Meanwhile, the AMD Vega 56 shows once again how advantageous the larger video memory is at higher resolutions. Finally, the two RTX graphics cards lead with a clear advantage.

Benchmark games

In Far Cry 5, the EVGA GTX 1660 Ti XC Ultra Gaming has a close race with the GTX 1070, but this race goes out in favor of the latter card.

Expressed in absolute numbers: 97 and 68 FPS at FullHD and QHD and 35 FPS at 4K and thus per resolution level exactly one FPS less than the GTX 1070.

But the AMD Vega 56, which is almost on par with the RTX 2060 FE, calculates even better.

Second round in Forza Motorsport 7: The fast car races don’t cause any of the test cards any major problems.

This is also true in 4K, where the EVGA GTX 1660 Ti can display a sovereign 65 frames per second.

The high action in Rise of the Romb Raider also requires a lot of GPU power.

Which is why the GTX 1060 and RX 580 already noticeably stutter in QHD.

The GTX 1660 Ti achieves a decent 54 FPS here, which is exactly the same as the GTX 1070 and AMD Vega 56. 4K is the end, however, when all three of the above mentioned test cards fall below the critical 30 FPS mark.

Power consumption, temperature and volume

The GTX 1660 Ti has clear advantages in terms of power consumption compared to the RTX graphic cards and even more so compared to the hot-headed AMD competition.

204 watts during gaming is a pretty good value considering the performance.

The temperature values are also impressive, with 36 degrees in the Indle and 64 degrees in gaming.

The same applies to the volume, because the card is almost inaudible in idle and is also the quietest of the tested graphic cards under load.

Nvidia’s newest GPU model already caused excitement in the Palit GTX 1660 Ti StormX test.

This also applies to the EVGA GTX 1660 Ti XC Ultra Gaming, which delivers a nice increase in performance, while costing less and potentially consumes less power.

In an absolute comparison, the EVGA GTX 1660 Ti was especially convincing with its high efficiency and the corresponding low power consumption.

Moreover, the card is pleasantly cool and quiet at the same time.

But if you want to buy a graphic card in the price range around 300 Dollar, you’ll usually be interested in the performance.

And there are currently no really better alternatives here.

If we stay within the Nvidia product family, then the RTX 2060 is regularly a good choice, because its raw performance simply turns out significantly higher, but it does not justify the higher price.

And for those who don’t want to spend more, the AMD Vega 56 presented itself as the perfect alternative, as it was not only faster in most tests, but also offers a bit more future-proofing with 8GB video memory, especially at higher resolutions.

Here you get a mid-range GPU with which the latest games run in Full HD on maximum details and at a reasonable price.

Although GTX is in the name, the 1660 Ti doesn’t use the Pascal architecture found in cards like the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070. Instead, the GTX 1660 Ti uses the new Turing architecture from Nvidia, known as “TU116”.

Especially in terms of gaming performance, the small model surprises with strong performance and can easily outperform the old GTX 1060, as well as keep up with the GTX 1070 and RTX 2060 in terms of frames.

Sure, the GTX 1660 Ti is a graphics card for Full-HD, but Techradar with the PNY XLR8 even made games like Resident Evil 2 and Anthem run on 4K and ultra details with 30FPS.

All in all, the PNY GeForce GTX 1660 Ti XLR8 OC is a fantastic graphics card at a reasonable price, albeit with a few cutbacks in cooling, design, overclocking and the volume of the individual fan.

From the front, Gigabytes Gaming OC looks very similar to its big brothers from the RTX 2060 and 2070 series, especially since they are all more than 28 cm long, 11.3 cm wide and 3.9 cm thick.

Much of the extra length of this design is due to the well-known Windforce 3X cooler, which protrudes at the rear edge of the PCB.

This cooling solution can of course more than handle the 120W of the GTX 1660 Ti.

However, the 1660 Ti Gaming OC 6G uses “only” three heatpipes for the heatsink, while the RTX 2060 uses four.

Practical: The three 80mm fans come to a complete standstill in idle mode, so you have complete peace and quiet outside of gaming.

Although you get a backplate here, it is unfortunately only made of plastic.

For the price we would have expected something as noble as the MSI Gaming X.

Also with the RGB there is only an illuminated Gigabyte logo, MSI is in front here as well.

All in all, Gigabyte has fully concentrated on the performance of this graphics card and you’ll get it.

The cooling is good, but we would have wanted a bit more for three fans. If it’s a 1660 Ti from Gigabyte, you can also take a look at the flagship, the Aorus version, which puts a scoop on top.

If you want a very good all-rounder with the best cooling in the 1660 Ti series, then the ROG Strix OC from Asus is your model.

This machine is the flagship from ASUS and comes with all kinds of features.

The card has a large triple fan including a large cooler, RGB support, a dual BIOS, a metal backplate and a high factory overclocking.

You also get two 4-pin PWM fan headers to synchronize your case fans and an RGB header to connect other RGB components.

However, all these features come at a very high price, which is unfortunately often too high (sometimes so expensive that you could already get an RTX 2060).

The large ASUS heatsink uses three long heatpipes as well as three axial fans to keep the card cool (and is certainly one of the largest in this series).

Especially because of the very good cooler you have a lot of overclocking potential here, which you should use to get the most out of it.

ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1660 Super

Due to the oversized heatsink and fan, this model is more than twice as big as the PNY GTX 1660 XLR8 Gaming OC and most other versions of the GTX 1660 Ti.

Asus claims that this card can deliver 140% more airflow than other models equipped with conventional wing fans.

All this ultimately leads to a graphics card that can achieve higher clock rates while staying nice and cool.

Unfortunately, the price performance of this card depends on how well you can overclock it, as it simply can’t keep up with RTX 2060 at the default settings.

Because this much more powerful GPU MIT Raytracing is already available for a few Dollar more.

Alternatively there is the slightly lower clocked “advanced version” of the ROG Strix, which is 20-40 Dollar cheaper.

For whom is the card worthwhile at all?

The most important question for you is when a GTX 1660 Ti is worthwhile for your build and what it can do. Therefore directly Tacheles:

If you are looking for a good graphics card for 1080p gaming of AAA games with high refresh rate (144hz) and high to maximum settings, then get one. It is also limited for 2K gaming if you lower some graphics options.

However, if you only want to play eSports titles like Fortnite, LoL, Dota or CS, you can also get a much cheaper RX570 (8GB) or GTX 1650 Super.

If it should be a GTX 1660 Ti, then we recommend rather the cheaper models.

This gives you a good overview and you can see directly that the values are usually quite close together.

It’s really extreme with the GTX 1660 Ti.

The partner cards are so close to each other in terms of performance that you can make your choice based on looks, your budget and things like volume and temperature.

You won’t notice a big difference in terms of performance when gaming, the FPS differences are virtually non-existent.

GTX 1660 Ti vs. RX 5600 XT vs. RX 5700 benchmarks

In the first battle we let the 1660 Ti compete against two opponents from AMD.

It is already foreseeable that she will lose here due to the price difference.

The 1660 Ti can’t really compete against an RX 5700, especially since it is on average 20-25% faster.

The GTX 1660 Ti also looks rather old against the RX 5600 XT, especially since the former gives you about 15-20% more frames when gaming.

Here we must rather recommend the RX 5600 XT, especially since you can get it for as little as 300 Dollar.

Sure, in the future the 1660 Ti will also support raytracing (the RX 5600 XT doesn’t), but whether it has enough power for this is more than questionable.

Furthermore, even cheap 1660 Ti models like the ones from PNY or Palit above cost almost as much as an RX 5600 XT from Powercolor.

Against GTX 1060 and RTX 2060: Benchmarks

The GTX 1660 Ti easily lags the old GTX 1060 in performance by 20-25%, which would even make an upgrade worthwhile.

However, it doesn’t stand a chance against the RTX 2060: The RTX 2060 is a good 20-25% faster in games and also brings raytracing and DLSS to the start.

RTX 2060 vs. GTX 1660 TI

If you have the budget left, then invest in an RTX 2060 (if you can get one). Sometimes you can get it for only a minimal higher price, but the performance increase and future-proofness of this card speaks for itself.

Against GTX 1660 Super & GTX 1660

It gets more interesting when we take a closer look at the 1660 series. But see for yourself:

Nvidia has made an interesting step with the introduction of the GTX 1660 Super, because the 1660 becomes completely superfluous due to the significantly improved performance and the 1660 Ti is also only 2-5% faster.

Which 1660s should you get?

We would actually always recommend the 1660 Super to you, especially since you can get it for 50 Dollar less and the performance is almost identical to the 1660 Ti. The 1660 only makes sense if you find a very good offer.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with Turing

Not GeForce GTX 2050, not GeForce GTX 1160 but GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is the name of the fourth graphics card class with Turing GPU for gamers.

For Nvidia, GeForce GTX 1660 Ti was thus the best name for a graphics card based on Turing, which doesn’t offer the essential new functions, but has nothing to do with Pascal thanks to a more modern GPU.

GeForce GTX 2050 with GTX instead of RTX wasn’t enough for Nvidia to distinguish it from the GeForce RTX 2000, GeForce GTX 1160 was too close to Pascal.

1660 should fix it now: GTX instead of RTX emphasizes the missing functions, 1660 with less distance to 2060 than to 1060 the clearly increased performance.

GTX 1660 Ti

But what is the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti anyway?

Roughly speaking, it offers the same Turing technology as the GeForce RTX 2000 probes, but without raytracing and without Tensor cores.

Apart from that, the architecture is identical.

However, Nvidia has further reduced the number of shader units in comparison to the GeForce RTX 2060, but has left the memory expansion at 6 GB GDDR6.

TU116 – Turing without RT & KI cores

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti comes with a new and thus the fourth Turing GPU: the TU116.

Like the larger variants, the TU116 is manufactured at TSMC in the 12-nm process, but is smaller with 284 mm² and less complex with 6.6 billion transistors – the significantly larger TU106 on GeForce RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 comes with 445 mm² and 10.8 billion circuits.

Three Graphics Processing Clusters have remained with the TU116 and each comes along with 8 Streaming Multiprocessor as with the TU104.

The number of shader units has thus been reduced from 2,304 to 1,536 FP32 ALUs compared to the TU106.

In addition, there are, as is usual with Turing, just as many INT32 ALUs, which can also perform integer calculations simultaneously to floating point calculations.

There are also no differences to the other Turing offshoots in terms of cache organization per SM, polymorph engines and other features such as variable rate shading.

Although the number of units is scaled down, the ratio remains the same as with the large GPUs.

It’s also interesting when comparing the performance of the TU116 GPU on the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti with that of the GP104 GPU on the GeForce GTX 1080.

The GP104 is eleven percent larger, but is also 23 percent faster in the configuration of the two graphics cards.

This indicates that a Turing shader is faster than a Pascal shader, but per mm² chip area Turing is also slower than Pascal in current games.

GTX 1660 Ti

A streaming multiprocessor on the TU116 differs from the other Turing GPUs in only two things:

There are neither raytracing nor tensor cores for AI calculations on the TU116.

That’s why there is no longer an RTX in the name of the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, but again the well-known abbreviation “GTX”.

However, this automatically reduces the space requirement per SM, so that the TU116 turns out smaller than if there were a hypothetical TU116 with just as many SM including RT and Tensor cores, whereby the difference is surprisingly small.

Nevertheless, the space saved allows more of this on a wafer and reduces production costs.

Officially, the reason for not using the special cores is that a certain basic power is needed to make use of the features.

This is certainly true for raytracing, but for the tensor cores and thus DLSS the argument does not work.

6 GB GDDR6 with less clock on 192-bit interface

Nvidia has also put the red pen to the memory interface. Of the 256 bits of the TU106, 192 bits and thus six 32-bit controllers are still left on the TU116.

This automatically means that the memory expansion is limited to 6,144 MB (or half).

However, it remains with the new and fast GDDR6 memory, whereby the frequency of the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti drops from 7.000 MHz to 6.000 MHz – 7.000 MHz was standard for Turing so far.

Speaking of frequency: Nvidia specifies a base clock of 1.550 MHz for the graphic card.

The average turbo should be 1.770 MHz.

Nvidia allows the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti a maximum of 120 watts – as much as in the GeForce GTX 1060.

A hint to the question, how big Turing is

If you compare the properties of the Pascal and Turing GPUs, you can see some interesting details.

For example, that Turing needs much more chip area per shader than Pascal – despite smaller production.

For example, the GP104 is only eleven percent larger, but offers 67 percent more FP32 ALUs.

Since neither raytracing nor tensor cores play a role in the TU116, the classic chip must be responsible for this.

If one also considers that the TU116 also has a smaller memory interface than the GP104, it becomes clear that the additional Turing features such as separate integer units and other new features such as Variable Rate Shading cost a massive amount of chip area.

A comparison of the TU116 and the TU106 again shows that ray tracing and tensor cores do cost space, but the proportion is not large: with 50 percent more shader units and the larger memory interface, the TU106 is only 64 percent larger than the TU116.

This means that RT and Tensor cores cannot occupy too much chip area, especially since the packing density is only slightly in favor of the TU106.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is based on Turing, but raytracing and Tensor cores are not available.

Nevertheless, the oddball isn’t significantly cheaper than the GeForce RTX 2060, although Nvidia has always mentioned both functions in the large RTX models as an argument for the increased prices.

To place the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti as a price-wise especially attractive alternative to the smallest GeForce RTX so far, wasn’t the plan, either.

Significantly faster and record-breakingly efficient

The performance of the first graphics card based on TU116 is very convincing in principle.

A performance plus in Full HD of 37 percent compared to the GeForce GTX 1060 and 24 percent compared to the Radeon RX 590 places the model only just behind the GeForce GTX 1070 (though as a relatively slow Founders Edition) and the GeForce RTX 2060 is only 16 percent ahead.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti is thus very well suited for gaming in Full HD with (usually) maximum details.

Even 2,560 × 1,440 is possible, although often with reduced graphics quality.

The performance per watt ratio is also convincing: no graphics card has ever been so efficient in the test.

Thus, the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti only needs a bit more energy than the GeForce GTX 1060, but works noticeably faster. This is already impressive.

The price-performance ratio isn’t better

Once again, it’s not the technology and also not the renouncement of RT and AI cores that are problematic for the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, but the 6 GB memory and especially the price.

According to Nvidia, partners want to have at least 299 Dollar for the graphic card at the start.

Thus, the 3D accelerator is on exactly the same line as the GeForce RTX 2060 in terms of price-performance ratio (in FPS).

It hardly costs more in absolute terms and offers RTX and DLSS.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti thus rather offers an argument for buying the next larger model.

The alternative GeForce GTX 1070 is almost sold out at comparable prices.

If you get another one, you’ll most likely make the better long-term purchase thanks to 8 instead of 6 GB.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti also lets you look at the competition these days, which also doesn’t have raytracing and AI edge smoothing to offer yet. AMD has placed the Radeon RX Vega 56 very aggressively in terms of price for a few days (and not by chance).

It offers more performance, has 8 GB memory and costs only 270 Dollar in the best case.

The disadvantage: The energy efficiency is clearly worse and at this price there is only a very loud reference design. Better and quieter models cost more, but still remain an equal alternative to the GeForce GTX 1660 Ti at 310 Dollar – with advantages and disadvantages on both sides.

The GeForce GTX 1660 Ti only becomes really attractive in the current environment when it approaches the 250 Dollar limit.
