The GeForce RTX 2060 Super is Nvidia’s entry into the new “Super” model series.

The graphics card rounds out the original GeForce RTX 2060 with around 15 percent more performance and an increased memory of 8 GB.

Nvidia’s own Founders Edition is doing quite well, but still offers potential for improvement, especially in the cooler.

The test of two custom models should clarify whether they can do it better.

After the RTX 2060 convinced less, nVidia brought the RTX 2060 Super as upgrade on the market.

The RTX 2060 Super is more of an RTX 2070 than a 2060 and definitely makes up for a lot.

But which are the best RTX 2060 Super partner cards? Is an RTX 2060 Super even worthwhile?

Can it finally beat the GTX 1080 in terms of performance and offer the features of the Turing series at the same time?

Is it one of the best graphics cards?

To answer these questions we show you the best models in detail and answer all your questions about the new graphics card series from nVidia.

Cooling and features

The Gaming OC imitates the aesthetics of the RTX 2060 Super Windforce and has a similar black/grey cooling housing, with the difference that there are three fans instead of two.

The Gaming OC’s fans are each 80 mm in size and have 11 blades that allow the air to flow smoothly.

In combination with an alternatively rotating center fan, this ensures an improved air flow pressure to the cooler below.

Although the Gaming OC is not the “coolest” RTX 2060 Super, the proven Windforce cooling system definitely works.

A nice extra: The RGB-illuminated Gigabyte logo optically gives the card the final kick after the last kick, and there is also a reinforced backplate on the back.

You won’t regret buying the GIGABYTE GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER GAMING OC, especially if you’re building a smaller mITX gaming build that requires a dual-slot graphics card.

The most important performance data:

Second Best Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 Super Aftermarket Card

With the RTX 2060 Super ROG Strix OC, ASUS once again offers an outstanding product with brilliant DirectCU-based coolers and a cool dark appearance.

Due to the silent BIOS mode, the card can also run very quietly (at the expense of a slightly higher temperature), but if necessary, the three fans will provide full performance.

The former function sets the card slightly apart from other models in the RTX 2060 Super Segment.

The components’ workmanship quality is first class, as usual from Asus:

The circuit board is very cleanly manufactured and the card has been reinforced with front and back plates.

With this RTX 2060 Super, you won’t have any problems in the monitor area with FullHD and (W) QHD resolution.

Technical specifications:

  • Ventilation: 3 fans

Cooling and Features

The ROG Strix OC settles at about 58 degrees Celsius in performance mode and reaches 62 to 64 degrees in silent mode (a BIOS switch is on board).

The acoustics can be rated as normal and quiet.

We doubt you’ll ever hear the card once it’s installed in your case (coil beeping shouldn’t occur here either).

With these values it is not only one of the coolest but also one of the quietest RTX 2060 Super models.

The most important performance data:

  • Maximum measured temperature under load: 58° C
  • Volume: Idle 29 dBA, under load 40 dBA

Third: ZOTAC GeForce RTX 2060 Super Mini

Pros

  • Very small and compact
  • Strong performance
  • Not much more expensive than Founders Edition

Cons

  • Less OC potential

Third Best Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 Super Aftermarket Card

ZOTAC mixes the RTX 2060 SUPER cards with its SUPER MINI and delivers a decent performance despite its compact size.

It’s smaller, but still offers all the benefits of the Turing GPU architecture and GDDR6 memory.

We have the same 8 GB GDDR6 on board, the clock rate increases to 1650 MHz and an 8 + 6 pin PCIe power connector is required.

Technical specifications:

  • Ventilation: 2 fans
  • GPU clock: 1410 MHz
  • GPU boost: 1650 MHz
  • I/O: 3xDP; 1xHDMI
  • dimensions: 20,9x11x4cm, 2 slots
  • Memory: 8 GB
  • Power consumption: 175 W
  • Power supply unit Recommendation: 550 W

Cooling & Power

With the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER MINI, ZOTAC has a small but powerful graphics card.

It is capable of smoothly displaying Apex Legends and Overwatch at 1080p and 1440p with over 120FPS (but has no problems with other games either!)

Due to its smaller size, it fits into 99% of all systems, according to Zotac.

For cooling, we have the IceStorm 2.0 cooler on the card, which keeps it nice and cool (though it does get a bit warmer than other models in our comparison).

ZOTAC uses a “dynamic layout” here that takes up more space, improves heatpipe layouts and more.

Add to that the unique sturdy metal backplate, which is also used on other Zotac cards.

The most important performance data:

  • Maximum measured temperature under load: 76° C
  • Volume: Idle 29 dBA, under load 38 dBA
  • Overclocking: 1995 MHz, performance increase of about 5-10% in games
  • 3D Mark Time Spy Benchmark (Non-OC): 8524

Fourth: MSI GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER GAMING X

  • Ventilation: 2 fans
  • GPU clock: 1695 MHz
  • GPU boost: 1695 MHz
  • I/O: 3xDP; 1xHDMI
  • dimensions: 24,8x14x5cm, 2 slots
  • Memory: 8 GB
  • Power consumption: 175 W
  • Power supply unit Recommendation: 550 W

Cooling & Features

MSI is using the latest version of the TWIN FROZR 7 cooler for the 2060 Super Gaming X, in which two 3.6 inches TORX 3.0 fans provide the cooling.

These combine the advantages of both conventional and dispersion fan blades to create an enormous airflow.

The redesigned fairings of the traditional fan blades provide a concentrated airflow for higher air pressure while reducing noise.

This RTX 2060 Super offers outstanding performance and runs at 1695 MHz ex works.

And that gives it a small advantage over NVIDIA’s reference card, while still leaving room for optimization.

In addition, the Gaming X also looks simply awesome, although this is of course subjective.

The workmanship of the components is first class and the card has been reinforced with front and back plates.

If you’re looking for a very quiet RTX 2060 Super, this will probably be your choice.

The most important performance data:

  • Maximum measured temperature under load: 63-67° C
  • Volume: Idle 30 dBA, under load 33 dBA

Cons

  • Only just above average boost clock rate

Fifth Best Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 Super Aftermarket Card

The best compromise: Asus relies on a massive 3-slot cooling system with two fans, which stand still under low load, in the comparatively cheap RTX 2060 Super Dual Evo.

The performance, however, doesn’t turn out to be less than many competitor cards thanks to OC mode with up to 1.725 MHz GPU clock.

In return, the Asus RTX 2060 Super Dual Evo represents the entry level for cards with this GPU in terms of price.

The TDP is on a fairly low level with 175 watts and the card manages with an 8-pin power connector accordingly.

The ASUS GeForce RTX 2060 Super Dual O8G EVO V2 offers a good price-performance ratio as a gaming graphics card from the mid-range segment.

Equipped with a TU106 graphics chip, the graphics card enables real-time ray tracing for breathtaking light and shadow effects.

The Turing GPU architecture, combined with the manufacturing in a 12 nm process, also makes a particularly efficient operation of the graphics card possible.

This super model of the GeForce RTX-2060 series is now equipped with 8 GB video memory with the GDDR6 specification.

The base and boost clocks have also been raised and the shader units (Cuda cores) have been increased from 1,920 to 2,176.

The features of the ASUS GeForce RTX 2060 Super Dual O8G EVO V2 at a glance:

  • Dual fan cooler design
  • With RGB LED lighting

Cooler design and clock rates

The 1,695 MHz boost clock of the TU106 graphics chip of the ASUS GeForce RTX 2060 Super Dual O8G EVO V2 graphics card is long lasting thanks to the effective dual fan cooler.

With GPU Boost 4.0, the graphics card automatically switches to the boost clock in order to provide maximum performance under heavy load.

The graphics card can also switch to OC mode via software, which increases the boost clock to 1.725 MHz.

The GDDR6 specification memory is connected to the GPU via a 256-bit memory interface and the 8 GB VRAM clocks at 7,000 MHz (14,000 MHz effective).

The cooler of the graphics card is equipped with an RGB LED illumination, which can be adjusted by software.

The 30 cm long graphics card is supplied with power via an additional 6-pin and 8-pin PCIe connector.

BUYING ADVICE: IS THE RTX 2060 SUPER THE RIGHT ONE FOR YOU?

Now that you know which RTX 2060 Super models are currently the best on the market, we would like to explain what you should look out for before buying.

In addition, we will give you some benchmarks that can make your decision much easier.

RTX 2060 Super or RTX 2060- Which makes more sense?

TLDR:

We think: Get yourself an RTX 2060 Super in any case! The old normal RTX 2060s are not really worth it anymore, especially since you can get a Super for about 50-70$ more, but you get a good 10-20% performance.

The 50$ are worth it, unless you find an RTX 2060 for less than 300$.

Then you might consider it. An upgrade from 2060 to 2060 Super is not worth it at all.

This is probably your most burning question. And rightly so!

For the same price as before, the RTX 2060 Super offers the same Turing graphics processor based on the 12-nanometer (nm) process, but now with more video memory (VRAM), render output units (ROP), texture units and raytracing (RT) cores, and higher clock speeds.

To be precise, the RTX 2060 Super has 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM compared to 6 GB of the previous model.

Likewise, the graphics card has 64 ROP units (48 units on the regular RTX 2060), 136 texture units compared to 120 and 34 RT cores compared to 30 units on the older model.

Especially the VRAM makes the super variant much more future-proof and gives you more room for 1440p gaming.

Finally, the newer super card has a basic clock rate of 1,470 MHz and an increased clock rate of up to 1,650 MHz.

In contrast, the older standard RTX2060 cards only reach a noticeably slower clock frequency of 1,365 MHz and reach a maximum clock frequency of 1,680 MHz – thus slightly faster than the super cards.

In a benchmark from Techradar, the RTX 2060 Super just got 20% more performance in 3DMark TimeSpy Extreme than its older predecessor.

Even the RTX 2070 was minimally beaten.

How does the RTX 2060 Super perform in gaming?

As mentioned above, the RTX 2060 Super is much closer to an RTX 2070 than an RTX 2060, as you can see in the video:

The RTX 2060 Super was specially optimised for 1080- and 1440p gaming.

In some cases it also runs on 4K resolutions, but only with details turned down and with 30FPS.

  • Especially 1440p resolutions with high or max settings at 60 FPS should be possible in all games except the most intense ones. By reducing to medium or high settings, users of monitors with high refresh rates (144hz+) should also get over 100FPS.
  • At native 4K resolutions with maximum detail, you will probably end up at 30 FPS. Therefore the RTX 2060 Super is a bit too weak on the chest for 4K.
  • For 1080p and VR games this card is an absolute overkill. In each of these scenarios you should be able to exceed 100 FPS without any problems and without any adjustments. Unless you use a high resolution VR headset. In this case the settings / resolution may need to be adjusted slightly.

What are the differences between all the RTX 2060 Super partner cards?

We say it over and over again, but want to emphasize it again here.

If you buy a graphics card it is important to understand that you get basically the same GPU chip regardless of the manufacturer.

In this case this GPU chip is the TU106, which all these cards have in common.

How these cards differ:

  • Cooling designs
  • clock rates
  • physical dimensions
  • Optics
  • Volume

A higher “factory clock rate” provides better performance, but the differences are very small.

Mostly this is only useful for those who don’t like manual setting and GPU overclocking.

If that sounds like you, a higher clocked card might be the best choice for you. Otherwise you should not make clock speed your main criterion for buying an RTX 2060 Super.

RTX 2060 Super Benchmark: How it performs against other cards

Generally speaking, the RTX 2060 Super, as you can see in the picture below, is between the RX 5700 XT and RX 5700 in terms of performance, depending on how well it is cooled and clocked.

We have compiled further benchmark comparisons for you below.

RTX 2060 Super Partner Cards Benchmarks

We have researched the values for the 3D Mark Time Spy benchmark for all RTX 2060 graphics cards in our comparison.

So you have a good overview and you can see directly that the values are usually quite close to each other.

Nevertheless, there are small differences and a reason why we named the Asus model, for example, “best RTX 2060 Super”.

By the way, all these values were read out for better comparability in non-OC mode.

We are aware that the 3D Mark Time Spy is only one of many benchmarks and that not all tests were carried out with the same system, but the values still give you a good point of reference.

Anyway, you can also see here that the performance slightly decreases with smaller cards like Zotac’s.

RTX 2060 Super vs. RTX 2070 and RTX 2070 Super Benchmarks

As already mentioned above, the RTX 2060 Super is virtually on a par with the old RTX 2070 in terms of performance.

Since the older RTX 2070 models were replaced by the newer RTX 2070 Super, an upgrade is not an option.

Particularly since the old RTX 2070 is only 5% faster than the new RTX2060S.

More interesting there is the analysis of Techspot. Here the RTX 2060 Super with the RTX 2070 Super was compared and in punkto Gaming performance gebenchmarkt.

The result: the RTX 2070 Super is around 10-15% faster than the RTX 2060 Super.

RTX 2060 Super vs. RTX 2070 (Super) – What pays off?

This is clearly a matter for your budget: The RTX 2070 Super undoubtedly has up to 15% more power than an RTX 2060 Super, but it also costs a whole lot more (minimum of 120$).

An old RTX 2070 is not worthwhile here any longer, particularly since the things are discontinued models and bring also too little achievement for the money.

RTX 2060 Super vs. RX 5700/XT benchmarks

This is probably the most interesting comparison for you, especially since the RX 5700 and RX 5700 XT cards really do deliver a good performance.

One must say here of course that the RTX 2060 Super wants to compete more with the RX 5700 than with the XT version.

Let’s have a look at some FPS values for the duel RTX 2060 Super vs. Radeon RX 5700.

It becomes quickly apparent here: The RTX 2060 Super CAN bring minimal FPS advantages (5-10 FPS), but these are marginal.

But also only in some games – in others the RX 5700 is ahead. But let’s look at a few more numbers.

About the RTX 2060 Super & Aftermarket / Partner Cards

When the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 was released in January, it served as a nice little entry point into Nvidia’s new raytracing future.

It was definitely more expensive than its Pascal predecessor, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060, but it still allowed users to experience life with raytracing at a lower entry price.

Nevertheless, it couldn’t quite reach the 1440p size.

These times are over.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super has arrived and finally brings RTX 2070-like performance to the masses.

In our tests, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super not only competes with the Vanilla RTX 2070, but it can also do it for a much lower price.

So, this is basically the best graphics card for most people, which means it will probably be in many Black Friday graphics card offerings this holiday season.

Still, we think that Nvidia probably should have released this card in January 2019 instead of the original RTX 2060.

Price and availability

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super reached the shelves on July 9th and will be sold for a cool $399 (approx. £315, AU$580) for the Founders Edition.

There is currently limited availability for third party cards, so prices are around the same $400 mark.

Hopefully these prices will decrease over time.

You may have noticed that this fits exactly into the Founders Edition of the Vanilla RTX 2060, and there is a reason for that.

Nvidia lowers the price of the original RTX 2060 Founders Edition to 349 $ (approx. 275 £, 500 AU$) and thus makes it possible to enter Nvidia’s Raytraced Vision for even lower prices.

Most importantly, Nvidia claims that the RTX 2060 Super is capable of coming within striking distance of the original RTX 2070 performance – it even wins on some of our synthetic workloads.

Still, we must not forget the other team here.

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT enters the race for the same price of £399 (about £315, AU$580), and delivers equivalent performance in most tests.

However, the RTX 2060 Super has an advantage over Team Red – via these RT cores the RTX 2060 Super supports raytracing, whereas the RX 5700XT does not.

Features and Chipset

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super uses the same innovative Turing architecture as its predecessor, but it comes with many improvements, especially regarding the number of cores and VRAM.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super has 2,176 CUDA cores compared to the 1,920 of the RTX 2060, which are also higher clocked and have a boost clock of 1,650 MHz.

These improvements alone explain the boost to 7.2 TFLOPs raw power.

The graphics card now also has more RT cores – up to 34 of 30 – so the RTX 2060 Super can now push out 6 Giga.

Furthermore, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super has 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM compared to the 6 GB of the original model.

This should make the graphics card future-proof and better suited for 1440p games.

All this comes with an increase in power consumption, whereby the new Turing card consumes 175 watts.

Physically, however, the card looks extremely similar to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Founders Edition.

In comparison, the RTX 2060 Super Founders Edition has a chrome design under the logo, which makes it more reflective.

Although it is probably only suitable for those with a transparent case, it is a welcome design boost.

Performance

Thanks to the improved specifications, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super should be the card to get if you want to play at 1440p with raytracing enabled.

We’ve subjected it to a litany of benchmarks and it easily belongs to one of the graphics cards you can see in 2019.

Metro Exodus, one of the most hardware-intensive PC games, is extremely fluid at 1440p, with all graphic settings up to Ultra.

Even with raytracing and DLSS enabled, we are able to get a playable experience – even if it wasn’t locked at 60 frames per second (fps).

We can also turn up all settings in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and are amazed – there are no performance drops during the game intro.

All this is also reflected in our benchmark results. In 3DMark TimeSpy Extreme, for example, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super scores a whopping 4,277 points, a massive leap of 21% over the original 2060, but what’s really cool is that the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super also scores better than the RTX 2070 – because this card reaches 4,117 points.

In games, the performance difference between the RTX 2060 Super and the original model is even greater.

In Metro Exodus we were able to achieve 58 fps compared to 53 on the RTX 2060.

At the end of the day, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super can handle most games with 1440p with ease.

This graphics card is definitely worth your time, especially if you rock a G-Sync monitor.

Final verdict

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super should be the Nvidia graphics card that most PC gamers want. It’s not overly expensive and lets you play most 1440p games without much – if any – loss in detail.

With the newly expanded 8GB framebuffer, this graphics card should last much longer in your PC.

It’s also much more affordable than the RTX 2070 when it was launched, and since the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super offers almost the same level of performance, the value speaks for itself.

We’re just wondering why Nvidia didn’t launch this card earlier – we finally have the value-oriented Nvidia Turing graphics card.

According to Nvidia, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super offers the same level of performance as the RTX 2070, at a significantly lower price, making it an indispensable companion for anyone who loves performance and wants to save money.
