iPhone 12: Buy or wait? 2020 model generation could bring major changes
It is one of the most frequently asked questions on the internet when Apple introduces new hardware: Buy or wait? Normally, anyone can easily answer this question for themselves by giving a little thought to the possible added value of the latest device and putting it in relation to the purchase cost. However, it is not uncommon for the “have-want-factor” to be taken into account. After all, we are all a bit nerdy, aren’t we?
This year, however, the question is particularly tricky. But let’s start with the initial situation…
Of course, no hard facts about the next iPhone devices are known yet. But at least the rumors about the iPhone 11 were already very concrete. It could be assumed that the 2019 model generation of Apple smartphones would experience only relatively small technical changes or improvements. For example, it was clear the 11 will certainly not yet be ready for the new mobile phone standard 5G. From a practical point of view this is negligible, as the 5G infrastructure does not yet exist in most countries. And it will still take quite a while – longer than just a year – until 5G brings real benefits to the masses here.
The most important technical innovation of the iPhone 11 was probably the camera module. This was supplemented by an additional lens and was equipped with a new feature called “Smart Frame”, which allows subsequent changes in perspective within certain limits. – Rumour had it. Otherwise, hardly any significant upgrades were to be expected. The design remains largely unchanged, as does the display technology, battery technology, etc.
It would have been surprising if Apple didn’t give the iPhone 11 a speed bump. New, even faster processors belong to the standard repertoire for model changes. However, pure computing power has only been of greater importance to a few users for several iPhone generations. For twittering, facebook, diagramming or other social activities – probably the most frequently used smartphone applications – even an iPhone 6 is sufficient. Even things like even higher display resolutions are hardly relevant anymore and serve at most as a buying argument for brochure data hunters or people with 400% eyesight.
Of course, any further improvement, however small, is always welcome. But they rarely justify an expensive new purchase. It is not without reason that the sales figures of smartphones in general are stagnating and also of Apple iPhones noticeably. The market is saturated, the offered performance is completely sufficient for the vast majority of users and even higher prices do not keep up with the users. The pain threshold has been reached.
iPhone 12 – Apple fans may have to wait longer for new iPhone
When Apple introduced the iPhone 11 in September 2019, some users may have been disappointed. Because really big innovations are missing in the current models. All the more, Apple fans are now eagerly awaiting the upcoming iPhone, which Apple will show this year. Some magazines are already revealing what to expect from the iPhone 2020.
The first question that arises is what the new iPhone will be called. Many speak of the iPhone 2020, according to the current year. Because Apple will present the smartphone this year – probably again in September. More logical, however, would be the name iPhone 11S or iPhone 12 – as the successor to the current iPhone 11 (Pro).
The latest news about the iPhone 2020 aka iPhone 12
Numerous reports on the coming iPhone generation are already circulating on the Internet. At the moment there are once again pictures showing how the iPhone 12 could look like. And also the market launch is in focus. Because due to the Corona crisis, the production of the new smartphones could be delayed.
New pictures and videos of the iPhone 12
With the new iPhone generation, Apple will in all probability retain the Notch. After all, the manufacturer will have to install some sensors in it. In addition to the actual front camera, it also contains the light sensor, the proximity sensor and the sensor for Face ID. However, Apple has reportedly moved the earphone from the Notch to the upper housing of the iPhone 2020, thus creating some space. As a result, the Notch could become smaller than before. Resourceful designers have also taken up this point and created new rendering images. For example, the video from EverythingApplePro clearly shows what the iPhone 12 could look like.
Fewer models to launch in September?
Almost even more exciting at the moment is the question of whether the new iPhones will be launched on time in September – and if so, which models Apple will offer for launch. Because according to current reports, some models could be delayed.
For one thing, the 5.5-inch Plus model of the recently introduced new iPhone SE is no longer expected to come onto the market this year, but has been postponed until the second half of 2021. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo justifies the postponement with the consequences of the Corona crisis, which among other things is delaying important tests and acceptance tests. One of these is the so-called Engineering Verification Testing (EVT).
The same fate as the new iPhone SE Plus is to befall the iPhone 12 Pro Max. According to Kuo, mass production of this model could not start until October, which would significantly delay the sales launch. Only the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro are to be offered in time for the launch in September, according to the analyst. These models are less complex than the Max model. It remains to be seen to what extent his forecasts are correct.
Display and design of the iPhone 2020
Even though we expect more innovations in the iPhone 12 than we have seen in the iPhone 11, visually, the smartphones will probably not change much. Apple already confirmed during its Keynote 2019 that there will be no iPhone with a pop-up camera in the future either. Thus, the front camera will continue to be found classically at the front in the upper display area. Here, Apple could either work with the classic, wide Notch, or with a new hole-shaped Notch.
The manufacturer has changed the arrangement of the rear camera with the iPhone 11. The square design of the camera divides people’s minds; not everyone can make friends with it. But Apple usually keeps a new design for a while, so we’ll probably see the dominant camera design on iPhone 2020 as well.
But the display size could change, according to the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. In the generational change from iPhone XR and iPhone XS (Max) to iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro (Max), Apple has retained the diagonal. The two cheaper LCD models each have a 6.1 inch screen, while the OLED versions are 5.8 inch and 6.5 inch respectively. According to Kuo, Apple is also relying on a display diagonal of 6.1 inches for the cheaper model in the 2020 models, but on 5.4 inches and 6.7 inches for the two OLED iPhones.
A frame rate of 120 Hz would also be conceivable for even smoother playback, in order to appeal to gamers in particular. Mobile gaming is very popular with Apple, as could be seen during Keynote 2019. With Apple Arcade, the manufacturer has introduced a gaming platform with which users can get a gaming flat rate for 4.99 Dollar a month. The manufacturer also has experience in the display area. After all, the 2017 iPad Pro with the “ProMotion” function is able to double the refresh rate from the standard 60 Hz to 120 Hz. Apple could also integrate the same feature in the iPhone 2020.
What the iPhone 12 could look like in the end is shown by current render images based on current reports. They were created by the Svetapple fan blog from Sweden.
Apple updates the camera
Apple is already focusing on the camera in the current iPhone 11. Instead of a single camera, there is a dual camera. Instead of the dual camera, there is a triple camera with 12 megapixels each and a new wide-angle lens. Apple also promotes the night mode for better pictures in the dark. This year, the manufacturer will be adding to this with the iPhone 11S or iPhone 12. Apparently Apple is planning to use a 64 megapixel camera and thus a significantly higher resolution. In times of cameras with 108 megapixels it is also necessary for Apple to move up a bit here.
A 3D camera based on the well-known time-of-flight technology is also being discussed again. ToF-sensors measure the time it takes a light pulse to an object and back again and thus determine the distance between this object and the camera. Maximum distances of 40 meters are possible, which is why ToF sensors are well suited for applications such as augmented reality. In the iPhone 12 it could be used in the form of the new LiDAR sensor.
Among others, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had predicted such a sensor. But instead of appearing for the first time in an iPhone, Apple has already brought the advanced ToF sensor into its iPad Pro 2020. LiDAR stands for Light Detection and Ranging. This is because the sensor is used for light detection and distance measurement. According to the Swedish blog Svetapple.sk, the whole thing could look like this:
But not only the LiDAR sensor should make the iPhone 12 Pro special. Kuo suspected that the device will also have a sensor displacement stabilization. The current iPhone 11 generation does have an ultra-wide angle, but this is not optically image stabilized. A larger sensor and the sensor-supported stabilization should provide better and sharper pictures with less image noise.
Technical features of iPhone 12
As with every new generation of iPhones, the iPhone 11S and iPhone 12 will use a new processor. It could be the Apple A14 Bionic, the successor of the current A13 Bionic. According to first benchmarks, the chip should not only be able to reach a clock rate of over 3 GHz, it should also beat the current top chipsets from Qualcomm in terms of performance.
But the special thing about the chip is obviously not only its increased performance, but also its 5G compatibility. With the 2019 iPhone generation, Apple users have waited in vain for an iPhone that supports the LTE successor. According to “Forbes”, it should finally be ready in 2020.
5G support thanks to cooperation with Qualcomm
The decisive factor for the 5G iPhone should be Qualcomm. The chip manufacturer apparently works together with Apple and grants the iPhone manufacturer access to its 5G modem X55. This is supposed to enable the iPhone 2020 in combination with Apple’s own A14 chip to communicate via the LTE successor. And the A14 chip offers another special feature: According to reports, it is manufactured in a 5-nanometer process and is therefore more compact than the current A13 Bionic in a 7-nanometer process.
However, the 5G iPhone is also expected to become more expensive than the standard models with LTE. “AppleInsider” speaks of a possible price increase of 400 Dollars, which is not exactly little in view of the already expensive EIA. The price for the iPhone 2020 5G should then be a good 1500 Dollar. It remains to be seen whether users will really pay the surcharge for 5G. It is certain that the network operators in this country are only just beginning to upgrade their networks with 5G. This means that the new mobile phone standard cannot really be used in everyday life yet. But if you want to have an iPhone that you can use for several years, the investment could make sense.
The 5G iPhone could get a more powerful battery with 4,000 mAh at the same time. There has also been speculation for some time that the manufacturer will switch from the Lightning port to a USB-C port. At the same time the upcoming iPhone is supposed to support reverse wireless charging. It would thus function as a wireless power bank and would be able to charge accessories such as the AirPods. Manufacturers such as Huawei and Samsung are already using this technology.
Will Apple bring back the fingerprint sensor for the iPhone 12?
The reports that Apple might return the fingerprint sensor on iPhone 2020 are also getting new attention. The manufacturer has filed a patent for a new type of Touch ID. As with Android smartphones, the sensor could move under the display – Apple has already installed a similar optical sensor in its new MacBook Pro with 16-inch display. You can read more about how Apple could implement the fingerprint sensor under the display on the upcoming iPhone here:
iOS 14 as latest operating system version
New iPhone, new iOS version – Apple plans several changes to iOS 14. According to the current status, these include not only freely selectable standard apps, but also new fitness functions, extended mouse support and adjustments to iMassage. We have summarized for you here what this means exactly:
iPhone 12: Prices and availability
The launch date of the iPhone 2020 is considered relatively certain: Apple traditionally presents its new smartphones on a Tuesday or Wednesday in mid-September. Possible dates for the keynote speech would therefore be 08 or 09 or 15 or 16 September 2020. On the Friday directly after the presentation, Apple begins the pre-sales phase, with the market launch starting exactly one week later.
At the moment it is only possible to speculate about the prices. In the past, the new iPhones often became a little more expensive. Only the iPhone 11 surprised with a 50 Dollar lower price than the iPhone XR. Apple, like every smartphone manufacturer, will eventually make its pricing dependent on the equipment. Should the iPhone 11S or iPhone 12 really get the many innovations that users expect, the price of the new models could rise again.
It is practically certain that a new iPhone is also planned for 2020. After all, Apple’s smartphone series is one of the most popular in the world and the iPhone 11 series is also being celebrated by fans. With the iPhone 12, some changes and innovations compared to the current flagship model are likely to come along.
To help you stay on top of the fog of rumours surrounding the iPhone 12, we have summarised all the known information about the iPhone 12 for you here. If there are any new developments, we will update this article accordingly.
iPhones probably cheaper in future
According to one market analyst, the iPhone 12 could be cheaper to launch than its direct predecessor. While the cheapest version of the iPhone 11 went on sale in the USA last September with a retail price of 699 US dollars, industry expert Chung-Hoon Lee expects the iPhone 12 to have a starting price of between 600 and 700 US dollars for the smallest model (5.4 inch screen).
In Europe, the prices for iPhones are usually higher – the iPhone 11, for example, was launched in Europe at a price of 799 euros. This is around 150 euros more than in the states (699 US dollars are currently around 645 euros). If Apple really were to offer the iPhone for 600 US dollars, this would correspond to a difference of 99 US dollars or 91 euros to the iPhone 11. It is unclear whether customers outside the USA would get the same price.
Alleged leak coincides with rumors
Leaker Jon Prosser brings new oil to the fire of iPhone 12 rumors on Twitter. He shows a picture with four different versions of the new iPhone and the front of one model. That the new series appears in such a variety has been suspected by others. On the whole, Prosser’s leaks also coincide with the rumours that have been heard so far.
First of all, there is a picture that shows the front of the smartphone. The special thing: The notch, i.e. the “indentation” in the display used for sensors and cameras, could therefore be significantly smaller on the iPhone 12 than on previous models. Although it is even larger than on the competition, this should make it much easier to use the status bar of the iPhone 12.
According to Prosser, the four versions of the iPhone 12 would differ in terms of display size, number of cameras and the material of the housing. It is expected that the new Pro models will feature three cameras on the back of the device, while the cheaper alternatives will only have two of them. However, all of them are to be equipped with the new 5G option, which will then allow particularly fast data rates in mobile communications, provided that the corresponding transmission masts are provided by the operators. Whether the leak will be able to hold its own is still open. However, Prosser had already divulged some insider information in the past, which in the end turned out to be true.
iPhone 12: Release could be delayed for months
Actually, it was previously assumed that the iPhone 12, like its predecessors, would be introduced between September and October 2020. Apple has traditionally presented the new iPhones in mid-September as part of a major keynote address, and the devices usually went on sale two to four weeks later.
According to a report in the Japanese magazine “Nikkei”, the release of the new iPhone series could now be delayed “by several months”. The trigger is, unsurprisingly, the further spread of the corona virus. Apple fears that the current situation would significantly limit the interest and consequently the willingness of customers to buy. This is a scenario that the first iPhone with 5G support should be avoided if possible.
A final decision by Apple is expected in May.
iPhone 12 5G: New chipsets to deliver significantly more power and less consumption
Recent reports suggest that the chips used in the 5G models of the iPhone 12 series are likely to set new standards in performance and consumption. Phonearena reports that Taiwan-based chip manufacturer TSMC is expected to start production of 5nm chipsets in the near future.
To explain: the lower the nm value in the production of the chipsets, the higher the number of transistors that can be accommodated in the chips. A high number of transistors means that the chipsets not only have higher performance but also lower energy consumption. For comparison, the SoC A13 Bionic used in the iPhone 11 introduced in 2019 was produced at 7nm, which means that a total of 8.5 billion transistors can be accommodated on the chip. With the 5nm production method, this figure could be as high as 15 billion. This corresponds to a total increase in memory chip density of 84 percent, which would mean a significantly higher operating speed.
Apple, however, is not the only manufacturer that is likely to rely on the new chips. Huawei’s competitors could also introduce the Mate 40 series with 5nm Kirin chipsets in 2020. The performance leap will also follow for Samsung smartphones – but the Korean manufacturer makes the chips itself and does not rely on TSMC products.
5G technology in iPhone 12: Probable, but problematic
5G is seen as the future of smartphones. The iPhone 12 is also expected to jump on this bandwagon, be it only with a 5G variant or with all models. This question is currently still open. But the question of 5G may already have been confirmed. Last year Qualcomm already revealed that the company will produce 5G antennas for Apple in the next four years.
However, there is now supposed insider information from the FastCompany site that gives the whole thing a slightly different direction. Apple is said to have a problem with Qualcomm’s 5G antennas. Allegedly they are supposed to be too thick to work with the design of the iPhone 12 planned so far. Since Apple does not want to throw the design overboard and the iPhone 12 is not supposed to be thicker, the company could stop the cooperation and develop its own 5G antennas instead.
Qualcomm’s chipsets should support smartphones that are even less than 8mm thick. If the preceding speculations are correct, Apple might want to launch a really slim device with the iPhone 12. After all, the iPhone 11 was already only 8.1 mm thick.
iPhone 12: Apple could present a fourth smartphone variant
Currently, opinions differ on the launch and the different models of the iPhone 12. Analyst Dan Ives, who works for the market research company Wedbush, expects that Apple will launch the flagship in four different versions. The analysts at JP Morgan also believe that we can expect to see four 5G-capable iPhones next year. Apple would thus be pursuing a completely new strategy.
The package would include the smaller 14 centimeter model as well as a 17 centimeter model. To make the four-pack complete, two 15.5-centimeter iPhones are also to be introduced. It is also assumed that two models will be a Pro version, the others the standard version.
It is assumed that the smallest of the planned flagships will be a completely new device – for those who miss compact smartphones. These would be fans of the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th generation, for example, who could then become potential customers for Apple again with a small iPhone 12.
The well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, on the other hand, assumes that there will still be three versions of the iPhone 12. Just as the current standard of the company dictates. This line-up would then include the iPhone 12, an iPhone 12 Pro and an iPhone 12 Pro Max.
iPhone 12: The expected new features
The two analysts also continue to argue over features when it comes to the iPhone 12. Ives expects that the new model will offer new features such as “3D Sensing System” and “Motion Control”. In addition, the expert believes that the cameras will be expanded to include an additional sensor. Then the iPhone 12 could appear with a 3D time-of-flight sensor that can capture depth better.
Other sources assume that the iPhone 12 will have a 120-Hertz screen, touch ID in the display and a USB-C connection. It is also speculated that Apple will part with the notch in the display and will again orientate itself on the earlier iPhone models in terms of design. But until the first pictures of the iPhone 12 are available, these are only ideas and analyses of the experts. There is widespread agreement among industry experts that the new iPhones will support the next mobile phone standard 5G.
iPhone 12 could come standard with AirPods
Despite the relatively steep price, Apple’s AirPods are a real bestseller, only recently it was announced that Apple would even double its production. According to rumors, the wireless headphones are even supposed to be standard equipment on the 12th generation iPhones.
It would be possible that Apple would include the “normal” AirPods here in order to win over customers for the Pro version with active noise suppression as well as sweat and water protection. These cost around 100 Dollars more than the cheaper AirPods 2 for around 180 Dollars. The alternative is that the AirPods mean a corresponding price premium for the iPhone 12 series. In any case, it can be assumed that Apple will not supply the expensive headphones for free – thanks to the high demand, the AirPods will ultimately allow you to earn a lot of money despite the price.
iPhone 12: Better battery life thanks to “ProMotion” technology?
While Apple was rather sparing with innovations in the last iPhone models, a really drastic change could be imminent for the 2020 generation. As the usually very well-informed paper DigiTimes reports on smartphone issues, Apple is planning to integrate the new “ProMotion” OLED display technology in iPhone 12, which would allow a display of up to 120 Hz. This technology might look familiar to some Apple disciples of the 2017 iPads – even then, many observers had predicted that the ProMotion displays would soon find their way into the iPhones.
A few months ago, the well-known leaker “IceUniverse” had already pointed out in a tweet that Apple could rely on a scalable 60 / 120 Hz display for the year 2020, which the Digitimes report now seems to underline once again.
The special thing about the “ProMotion” technology: Depending on the task, the display can scale between 60 and 120 Hz – the refresh rate is then only increased for certain sections of the screen, which would ultimately have a positive effect on battery life.
