The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super is certainly one of the most interesting high-end graphics cards on the market from a price/performance point of view, and can be especially worthwhile for those who not only want to take advantage of NVIDIA’s new ray tracing effects, but are also looking for the corresponding performance for high resolution and maximum details.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming serves the lower price level of the series without having to accept many compromises – how the 549 Dollar model performs with its own cooling solution can be seen in this Hardwareluxx article on the following pages.

If you want to play away from the Full-HD resolution and also use the ray tracing effects with good quality and performance, you should choose a medium model number among the RTX models from NVIDIA, because the small GeForce RTX 2060 (Super) quickly reaches its limits in many games and scenarios.

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super is certainly the more interesting model in this respect, but it still remains far from the expensive prices of the flagship models, which sometimes reach up to 1,500 Dollar.

Their price starts at around 520 Dollar, which should be an interesting price range for many ambitious gamers.

However, with elaborate cooling systems, higher clock rates or a upgraded power supply, their price quickly penetrates the region of up to 700 Dollar.

The KO family from EVGA is supposed to serve the lowest price level of each series, apart from the expensive top models, and still offer more than the standard.

Although the cards generally adhere strictly to the specifications of the Californian graphics forge and thus do not turn up the heat any further, at least on paper, they can still come up with a powerful cooling solution.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming is such a model.

It has its own dual-slot cooler with thick copper heatpipes, numerous aluminum fins and two huge radial fans, but does without RGB lighting and many other details.

Under the hood there is the TU104-410 GPU with standard clock rates and a power supply via a 6- and 8-pin PCI Express connector.

For this the price is only about 30 Dollar more than the currently cheapest RTX-2070 super offshoot.

EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming – Impressions

Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super

On paper, the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming resembles the Founders Edition from NVIDIA.

Both are based on the TU104 GPU with 13.6 billion transistors from the 12 nm production and can access an 8 GB GDDR6 video memory, which is connected via a 256 bit wide interface and achieves a bandwidth of up to 448 GB/s thanks to clock rates of 1,750 MHz.

The 2,560 shader units get to work with a basic and boost clock of 1,605, or at least 1,770 MHz.

However, due to the powerful cooling, the EVGA model could achieve higher clock rates than the NVIDIA template, or maintain them longer.

In addition, both models feature 64 raster output stages and 160 texture units, as well as 320 tensor cores and 40 RT cores for ray tracing acceleration.

The TDP is specified at 215 W.

Optically, the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming has not much in common with the Founders Edition.

Instead of the radial cooler, EVGA relies on an axial system with two huge 90 mm fans, thick copper heatpipes and numerous aluminum fins, which still claims two slots in height for itself.

The two fans stop working in idle mode until a core temperature of around 59 °C is reached, thus cooling the 3D accelerator passively and completely silently.

Overall, the EVGA model has a total length of 263 mm, whereby the cooling system is flush with the actual PCB and does not protrude any further.

Our initial assumption that the card would achieve higher clock rates than at least stated was confirmed in our tests.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming proves to be extremely clock stable and consistently reaches 1,935 MHz, which is significantly above the guaranteed boost clock of 1,770 MHz.

The temperatures range between 70 and 72 °C, depending on the game.

As far as the design is concerned, EVGA relies on an extremely simple color scheme.

Both the PCB and the cooler cover are completely black. Only a few lettering, such as the EVGA logo, the super designation or the model number are slightly highlighted in colour.

Thanks to numerous indentations and curves, the board leaves a sporty, fast impression.

With an overall length of 263 mm, the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming was not artificially extended to have additional space for the cooling system. Nevertheless, two huge 90 mm fans are available, which stop working in idle mode until a certain temperature level is reached.

A huge copper block is placed directly on the Turing GPU, through which the waste heat is transferred to the numerous aluminum fins with the help of six heat pipes, and the two axial fans finally transfer the waste heat to the case interior.

In contrast to the more expensive offshoots, EVGA does without an RGB lighting system in its cost-optimised KO Gaming.

Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super

The American Comapny have also saved on a backplate, but not the NV-Link connector, which theoretically allows two of these graphics cards to be connected together in an SLI composite system.

The graphics chip is supplied via seven phases.

On the front of the 3D accelerator there is only a manufacturer logo and the exact model name.

It is also nice to see that the model requires no more than two slots in height and can therefore be used without any problems even in more compact housings.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming is powered via an additional 6- and 8-pin PCI Express power connector, which, together with the 75 W provided by the PCIe 3.0 interface, could draw up to 300 W from the power supply.

However, the TGP of the super graphics card is only 215 W.

The dual-slot bezel offers the usual interfaces with DisplayPort 1.4 and HDMI 2.0, all of which are provided on the lower half of the I/O bezel, whereas the upper area with numerous ventilation slots is intended to provide better ventilation for the graphics card.

Test system

We have changed the software in the form of the games and benchmarks, the hardware has also been refreshed.

The test system is located in a closed case in order to be able to test as practically as possible.

In addition, Windows 10 is on the PCI Express SSD, but we had to move the games to a hard disk.

However, this does not stop the tests.

Volume, temperature and power consumption

Like most modern graphics cards, the two fans of the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming also stop working in idle mode, keeping the 3D accelerator passive and thus completely silent until the chip temperature reaches about 59 °C.

Under load, however, the rotors actively switch on and thus provide a noise level of 38.7 dB(A).

This is a good deal quieter than the Founders Edition of the faster sister models, but also louder than many a competitor’s own solution or from our own company.

Together with the other components of our test system, the EVGA card approves 343.9 W under load, which is due to the comparatively high clock rates under load.

The card’s efficiency also drops a bit here.

The same applies to the measurements of the real power consumption, whereby the differences between the individual GeForce RTX-2070 super models turn out extremely small and all comparison models are at about the same power level of around 215 W. The TDP is thus fully exploited by EVGA.

There are no problems with the temperatures.

Here, the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming reaches 71 °C under load, whereby the manufacturer has found a good compromise between volume and cooling performance.

Other graphics cards – especially the current AMD models, such as the Radeon RX 5600 XT or Radeon RX 5700 XT – get considerably warmer here.

Verdict: Performance winner in RTX 2070 Super vs GTX 1650

Nvidia Geforce RTX 2070 Super

EVGA’s KO gaming series is the manufacturer’s latest product line and is from now on to represent the lowest price level of any series.

The cost reduction due to the omission of an RGB lighting system, a backplate or even the factory overclocking as well as an upgraded power and voltage supply should ultimately be passed on directly to the customer.

In fact, the EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming, with a price of around 550 Dollar, costs only about 30 Dollar more than the cheapest model in the price comparison, but remains clearly away from the expensive in-house solutions of other manufacturers, which sometimes cost up to 700 Dollar.

But you don’t have to make any real concessions.

EVGA still straps on a custom cooler, which attracts attention with six thick copper heatpipes and two huge 90 mm fans, and of course with numerous aluminium fins.

It cools the graphics card semi-passively in idle mode and thus completely silently and remains pleasantly quiet even under load, whereby the expensive models score slightly better here.

Although the card strictly adheres to NVIDIA specifications in terms of clock rates, it achieves significantly higher frequencies in practice thanks to the powerful cooler, which keeps the GPU at a good 71 °C. With 1,935 MHz in all benchmarks, the test model proves to be extremely clock stable and faster than many a comparison model.

Playing in 1440p is possible without any problems even in the highest graphic settings, even for the high UHD resolution it’s enough, depending on the benchmark and game.

The GeForce RTX 2070 Super is very well suited for upscale performance requirements and is also intended for those who want to try out the RTX effects in games like Battlefield V or even the new Minecraft, for which the smaller series representatives are usually too slow.

The EVGA GeForce RTX 2070 Super KO Gaming is a solid graphics card that goes back to the basics and passes the cost savings directly on to the customers.

Best price-performance ratio in RTX 2070 Super vs GTX 1650

In a phase of near complete transition to GDDR6 memory, NVIDIA and some board partners are also switching the GeForce GTX 1650 to the faster memory.

This year, NVIDIA followed suit with the mobile versions of the GeForce super cards.

We’ve now taken a closer look at the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G, which is one of a few models of the GeForce GTX 1650 that is now offered with the faster memory.

With the super models, NVIDIA has made major changes to the product range.

In most cases, the number of shader units has been increased, the structure of functional units has been increased – here and there we switched to the larger Turing chip.

The memory remains untouched, but there were some cards outside the Super Series that did not yet rely on the faster GDDR6 memory.

Additionally there are rumors that NVIDIA will switch the GeForce-MX GPUs to GDDR6.

There should be a clear motivation behind this:

Some memory manufacturers are no longer producing GDDR5 and are only producing GDDR6.

NVIDIA is reacting to this fact and is now adapting the smaller models as well.

With the update to GDDR6 memory, there are now three models in the lower price segment.

The differences between the GeForce GTX 1650 and the GeForce GTX 1650 Super are obvious:

The Turing architecture has been drilled a bit, the cards offer more shader units.

GDDR6 is already used for memory.

The performance leap was, as our test shows, quite considerable – especially when you consider the small price difference.

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G, which we tested, is now also equipped with GDDR6.

The memory bandwidth increases from 128 to 192 GB/s and is thus on par with the super model.

The memory expansion remains identical with 4 GB.

However, NVIDIA has reduced the specifications for the base clock a bit. It goes back from 1.485 to 1.410 MHz.

The boost clock has been increased from 1.665 to 1.710 MHz.

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650

Nominally, the power consumption also remains identical with 75 W.

The super variant reaches 100 W.

No matter if GDDR5 or GDDR6, the GeForce GTX 1650 isn’t a real performance miracle.

It is designed for gaming in 1080p and even then doesn’t allow for all the details.

However, if you want to acquire such a card, you might be faced with the question of whether the GDDR6 memory surcharge is reasonable or not.

Now let’s take a closer look at the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G and start with the dimensions and externally recognizable functions and ports:

Gigabyte could make the card considerably more compact, as the PCB is only 150 mm long.

This would make a Mini-ITX card feasible.

However, since one wants to design the cooling capacity optimally, the cooler is somewhat larger than the PCB and thus the board has a length of 190 mm.

The height of two slots is common.

Two fans with 75 mm each take care of the active part of the cooling.

The additional power supply is provided by a 6-pin connector.

As much variation as possible is used for the display connections and double connections are avoided.

According to the specification, the TU117 GPU should achieve a boost clock of at least 1.755 MHz under load.

The card achieves a boost clock of 1.890 to 1.905 MHz via the benchmarks used by us and thus keeps to its own specifications.

The GPU temperature is pleasingly low with a maximum of 58°C.

The card’s cooler copes more than well with the waste heat of about 75 W.

There’s actually not much to say about the card in terms of looks.

Gigabyte uses two axial fans with a diameter of 75 mm, which fit seamlessly into the dark design with their black, semi-transparent fan blades.

Only a few grey elements stand out a bit – but that’s about it.

A look at the back shows the extremely short PCB, the protruding heatsink and also the protruding cooler cover.

So Gigabyte could build the board much shorter, but uses the additional volume for cooling.

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650

The two axial fans start to rotate at a GPU temperature of 50 °C, before which they stop. If the load on the card decreases again, the fans stop rotating at 40°C.

Thus, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G is a semi-passive card.

The aluminum heat sink can be seen under the fan.

On the card’s front side, the additional power connector is found, which can supply 75 W with six pins according to the specification.

Basically, it would be possible to supply a GeForce GTX 1650 only via the PCI Express slot, but since most manufacturers still turn the screw a bit at the power limit, an additional supply is necessary.

The display connections are located on the slot bracket. Here we see DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.0b and DVI once each.

This should allow all common monitors to be connected directly without an adapter.

Without the cooler, the view to the PCB is clear. In the middle we see the TU117 GPU, with the four GDDR6 memory chips sitting directly next to it on two sides.

On the PCB, the lanes leading to the memory chips and the PCI Express slot are clearly visible.

The heat sink is made of aluminium.

The GPU and the memory chips rest on this heatsink.

For the GPU Gigabyte uses thermal paste, the memory chips are plated through with thermal pads.

Gigabyte designs the heatsink with large longitudinal gaps, through which the air can flow better.

The GDDR6 memory chips used by Gigabyte come from Micron.

The GDDR6 increases the memory bandwidth from 128 to 192 GB/s and is thus on the same level as the super model.

Volume, temperature and power consumption

Because the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G turns off its fans in idle mode, it can be considered silent in this state.

It remains pleasantly quiet under load with 35 dB(A), which shouldn’t be a problem with two axial fans with a waste heat of 75 to 80 W.

A GeForce GTX 1650 consumes about 75 W (the exact measurement follows in a moment).

So, if the entire system consumes about 200 W, a large part falls on the remaining components in the system.

This becomes clear in the single measurement.

Here, we measured a consumption of 82.3 W for the gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G, which is a bit less than the GeForce GTX 1650’s GDDR5 variant, but is also within the measurement tolerance range.

The GDDR6 memory nominally consumes a bit less, but we obviously can’t really display this.

Both in idle and load mode, the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G doesn’t have any problems keeping the GPU’s temperatures low.

We reached a maximum of 58 °C under load, which is far below what we are used to with cards from the middle class on.

The cooling of the cards can therefore convince from several aspects at once.

Now it’s a question of whether the performance is also right.

Conclusion

Nvidia Geforce GTX 1650

Let us make one thing clear right at the start:

A GeForce GTX 1650 is and remains a GeForce GTX 1650 – the GDDR6 memory doesn’t change that.

Slowly but surely, memory manufacturers seem to want to switch their production completely to GDDR6 and the stock of GDDR5 memory will increasingly decrease, so that the use of the faster memory makes economic sense even for the smaller cards.

We see just this in the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G.

The memory only changes little in the card’s performance.

Here and there there is a performance plus in the low, single-digit percentage range.

The differences are measurable, but certainly not noticeable for the gamer. A GeForce GTX 1650 is clearly aimed at casual gamers of less elaborate 1080p titles.

The latest AAA games have to do without details and special effects.

A hardware accelerated raytracing isn’t available on the GTX cards anyway.

But this shouldn’t make the Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G a bad card.

It offers an appealing performance for a price of 160 Dollar.

AMD currently has no RDNA competitor model to offer in this segment.

At best the Radeon RX 570, which is now really getting on in years, is an alternative.

The Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G can convince in terms of efficiency and cooling.

It is economical, quiet (even silent in idle mode) and doesn’t get warm.

If you could have done without the additional 6-pin connector, it would even be an ideal upgrade candidate, which can be easily installed independently of the power supply.

So, if you’re about to buy a GeForce GTX 1650, you should take a look at a model with GDDR6 memory, such as the gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 Windforce OC 4G.

When in doubt, it’s always the better choice (compared to a card with GDDR5 memory) if availability and price are right.

Sooner or later, the GDDR6 will replace the GDDR5 variants – if there isn’t a successor by then.

The RTX 2070 just has superior performance with its 8GB VRAM.

However, for most users and gamers the GTX 1650 offers an amzing price-performance ratio.
